Hello from Hong Kong
« on: April 06, 2013, 11:30:47 AM »
Hello all!  I am Kevin H. Y. L. and come form Hong Kong, a very small city in the Asia. Am I the only Asian in this place? (Sorry for my poor grammar, I have never written so many English before.)

I built a Revell 1:72  Sopwith Triplane painfully. This kit is my first WWI aircraft kit. It is badly molded and there are so many ejector/injector pin markings, deformed engine and a pilot with a drill hole on its stomach! I was going to give up, but  I kept telling myself to complete this model plane.  It is almost finish now and I find myself in love with WWI aircraft at the same time: It is not easy to begin, but the structure becomes very attractive once almost finish.

The rigging part remains. The rigging details in the leaflet is a mess so I was looking for tips from internet and then I find this place. Thanks a lot !  :D
There is not much information of WWI in Hong Kong because most hobbyists prefer Gundams/Cars/WWII things. The rigging they done was the radio line in WWII aircraft or battle ships but never more than that.  They tend to stay away from WWI and think that WWI aircraft doesn't have many choices in models or too difficult.  I can now prove them it is wrong.

After I bought my first Roden 1:72 Sopwith F.1/3 Comic cheaply (HK$38 -> about US$5) from a "clearance sale" corner in a model shop, I can't held but start to collect Roden WWI planes. They are rare in my place now since the shops don't import Rodens for more than 10 years.  :-[ Where can I find the Roden models now?

The biggest WWI aircraft kits I collected, is the 1:72 Roden(055) Zeppelin Staaken R.VI. (Where can I get a display case to fit its 59 cm wings and 31cm body?)

My Sopwith triplane (not rigged yet) :

The decal was lost so I painted part of them by myself:

Welcome to the forum, Kevin!  So very glad you found us.  As far as I know, you are our first member from Hong Kong.  Perhaps our first Asian member, so congratulations on being a trail blazer!  Your Triplane looks great and you've come to the right place for tips on rigging.  I look forward to seeing her completed and seeing more of your work in the future.
Cheers,
Bud

Welcome Kevin, I'm sure it won't be long before you can convince your friends that WWI aircraft modelling is not impossible - just a little differant. You've come come to the right place for tips on techniques etc.
Those Revell kits are definitely a challenge, but so are some of the Roden ones - there are plenty of builds on here you can look to for tips on where the problems are....

Hi Kevin and welcome from France.

Having focused my attention on 1/48 scale for a few years and now on 1/32 as well, I'm lost in admiration for those who can get good results from 1/72. I'm just all fingers and thumbs now....!

Best wishes
Nigel

Hello and Welcome Kevin:

Your English is quite good, so no worries there.  We all start somewhere, you have done a good job with that ancient kit.  I am sure those molds have been paid for many times over.  I had that when I was a teenager in 1967 or so; but I digress.
Lots of good people on here willing to share their knowledge.  Always a learning experience coming on here.

Best

Hallo and welcome Kevin,
I guess the Roden kit you bought for 5 $ it's a good deal, but if you actually are a beginner as you say (the triplane looks very good neverthelless) I think Rodens are not the best way to start.
I have done so far only 2 models in 1/72 (ans I swear will never do another one!) : A revell DH2 (low quality but pretty easy to build) and a Roden Albatros W4 floatplane (great quality of the kit but pretty difficult to assemble).
Probably all the rest of the brands stays in the middle ... but can't say because my scale is 1/48
I hope these tips will help you in some way.

Ciao from Italy
