That looks like excellent progress, Nigel. Such a great model and quite different (dimensionally) than the other E series. What do you seal your Aviattic decals with?

Thanks very much Gary. I've found (after a few trials) that putting a good gloss coat over the Aviattic decals helps minimize any silvering. I finish my models with VMS satin varnish but I've found if I am lazy and apply that straight on top of the Aviattic decals it can create some issues with silvering. But a good strong gloss coat avoids that. I use Mr Hobby water-based varnish in a rattle can for that. It's a bit high risk because it's easy to apply too much and get runs, but the varnish self-levels really well and creates a nice strong seal.

A bit more progress, she is up on her legs. The cowling and gun are just loosely in place and rigging of the undercarriage is underway. Once that's done I can move on to the final stage of weathering before attaching the wings and tail feathers.

The castor oil marks at the wing root are a nice touch.
The landing gear struts look fantastic, too - just the right amount of weathering and grime.


........ Come to think of it, I still have a half-finished Wingnut E.I. lying around somewhere ....

Thanks Bertl, really glad you like it. I spent a long time cleaning up the seam lines and refining the bands on the landing gear so that they took the weathering well.

Thanks Warren. I tried every conceivable type of pen on my previous Eindecker build and none worked for me. So this is all done with a brush.

Catching up (again!). The turned metal finish is so realistic -and even more so given that it was done with a brush. The oil staining is also superb - I had quite forgotten just how dirty any rotary engined machine became fairly quickly: you have captured well the ways in which the oil soaked into the different parts of the aircraft.

A masterpiece in the making.

Thanks Bertl, it's a simple but effective process. I spray the mg black, the highlight the hard edges and raised detail with a graphite pencil. I then rub the whole thing with AK Interactive dark steel pigment powder. I use one of those small make up sponges on a stick to do this. I don't seal it with any varnish though, so sometimes a little additional pigment needs to be applied once the mg is glued in place (as handling can dull it a little).

Basically, I do the MGs pretty much the same way you do, but the metallic effect on your MG is really outstanding.
I just love it.

The weathering is now finished. I've used MIG Starship Filth oilbrusher to add a final layer of oil staining which hopefully makes the oil effect look a bit more like it has soaked through the fabric. The engine and cowling are attached, I've just got to let the weathering dry and then it's on to final assembly and rigging.....
