Very nice start, Ian.  At this rate, I think you'll be able to finish on time.
Cheers,
Bud

  Ian,
Excellent progress and fast too. As Bud said I think you'll finish by your deadline. Keep up the grand works my old friend.

Thanks folks, this is doing OK as a quick build.  I have made quite a bit of progress on the model, but it won't be done in a weekend.  I have probably done about 15/16 hours on it, but if I was to dedicate every waking hour from friday teatime until sunday bedtime that would give 30+ hours, then it could be done.  This still would preclude the use of oils for woodgraining, and the more skilled you are the quicker you work I suppose.

I have assembled the fuselage halves then the lower wing to the fuselage, painted this with a little filler added, as well as the top wing.  I used Revell Aqua no 99 Aluminium for the doped areas, in thinned coats.  This Italian version calls for overpainting of French roundels, which I think has come out ok.  I touched up the wheels, tail skid, and drilled out some of the rigging holes.

For the prop and wing struts I used coloured pencils to give hints of colour variation in the wood, then a wood colour wash and finally a tinted klear coating.  The wing struts have aluminium bands, about 1mm thin, which I tried to do freehand but really ought to be masked.  The day finally caught up with me and I stopped here, for fear of making a silly mistake.

Although the weekend opportunity has now passed, I will attempt to finish this asap, as if I could have committed more time to it.

That's my conclusion really, you can build this over a weekend, just, but don't expect to do anything else!

That really looks good Ian!  I particularly like the wood tones in the cockpit and the silver overpaint of the top wing roundels.  How did you achieve that?

Bob

That is looking very fine, Ian. You might not be able to get it done this weekend, but there's always the next. Anyhow, I always understood the Weekend Edition to mean it had to be done on the weekends ... ;)

Cheers,
John

Thank you :)

Bob, the over painting was more straightforward then I imagined.  I used a mid-grey rattle tin primer, before applying the decals.  The aluminium was hand brushed on in several thin coats, covering the decals, but because the primer was grey, the rest of the aluminium surface looks ok by default.

Managed a little more tonight.  Fuselage decals and elevator stencils applied and sealed with klear.  Engine and cowling fitted, and rigging holes drilled out, some of which is guesswork following research as there are missing guide markings on the kit.  I attached one end of each rigging line, either to the underside of the top wing, or to the cabane struts.  Windscreen surround is painted, as are the undercarriage components but these are still on the sprue.  The elevator and rudder control horns look tiny but will be ok with patience.  I think if this was truly a weekend job, then you can forget rigging too!

Build time approx 20 hours so far.  I did consider trying to laminate the prop, but I was quite pleased with the results so far using the quick method with pencils and klear, so will leave alone.  No more pics yet, tomorrow maybe....

How about expanding the definition of "weekend" to 24 hours total build time?

Looking good Ian, but surely 'weekend' means something that is built at weekends not in one weekend.

Cheers

Pete.

You may be right Pete, but I reckon they did mean these to be built over a weekend.  Unfortunately, and I am sure it is the same for almost everyone, life gets in the way!!

I did not touch the model last night - I could have used oils on the prop after all....

So what if you didn't finish it over the weekend, Ian.  You got a lot done on it and you did it beautifully.  Very well done, mate.
Cheers,
Bud
