Gotha G.IV. `K`. Roden 1/72
« on: February 18, 2026, 04:20:19 AM »
Howdy!

Now it is ready. The quality of these photos is not ideal as I had to take them with artificial lighting. But there is no real chance for enough natural lighting for a month or two around these parts, so here goes.

This was quite a bit easier than the G.V, because I attached the upper wing now and could use split+sanded bamboo instead of the kit struts. I had built the other basic bits in the late 90?s, but all the smaller things, wheels, inner details, armament etc were missing. But now it is done, rigging and all. I also repainted the plane to a lighter shade and repainted the red bits over the green ones as the recent wisdom is that they were actually red like on Brandenburg?s lead machine. This K was one of the three `headquarter machines`, which were the lead planes on the daylight raids to England on the summer of 1917. This model portrays the machine as depicted in the famous (only) film clip of the London bombers taking off. So it has two upper wing tanks and the mudguards are missing, like in the clip.

So now I have resurrected these two unfinished Gothas, which I begun when the kits came out. This is not over yet, because I still have G.III and G.Va/b in the stash. One day, one day,,,,

Cheers, Skyhook

I have seen very few Roden Gothas finished - yours makes up for the lack. A very fine model indeed - looking forward to seeing your G Va/b. (I have one started but I do not see myself finishing it however....).

A lovely result, glad you resurrected this one. The new colours look great and it's nice to see one of these built so well, they do look very good. And I am also glad you showed us your bottom!

Looking great Skyhook, well done!
It's interesting to see that large parts of this beast's fuselage were actually open, back and front.

Harharhar...  :D.  Gotha?s bottom is definetly more interesting and historically important.  Seriously, it was indeed a great innovation and very good engineering. The plywood was actually rather thin, but the inner structure was very well designed. I think I have not read about a case, where Gotha would have failed structurally  in mid air without any combat damage.

and thank you all for the very positive comments!  I too am happy with the end result. The original paintwork was a bit thick and I could not sand it away properly as the main components were already in place, apart from the top wing and landing gear. So it is not as smooth as I would have liked it to be, but there is another G.IV still in the stash,  who knows what might happen one day

cheers, Skyhook

Nice job!  I love Gothas and that one is great.  I like the color scheme too.
