Fokker DVI conversion
« on: February 14, 2026, 08:15:27 PM »
Just completed this one which has been hanging about for ages now.  :D

It combines modified Eduard Fokker DVII bits and a Dr1 fuselage to create the Fokker DVI used by Kest 1a (I know there's a Roden kit in this scale, but I had plenty of Eduard DVII and Dr1's on the shelf so it seemed like a sensible idea at the time)
The original plan I found showed a slightly longer fuselage than the standard Dr1, but a later plan showed it the same length - guess which one I based this on  ;)
Anyway straightforward mods to reduce the DVII wings with struts and tailskid from my usual brass. Throw in a hand carved prop and a small parts engine + some etched bits and bobs and some Aviattic lozenge and this is what you end up with -

Difficult to judge from a black and white photo, but I could find nothing definitive about the cowl colour which looked slightly darker than white. The Kest 1b was shown as mid blue in one profile I looked at so I went with pale blue just because it looked pretty and was a one off anyway. This was an aircraft that was sent to the Kest for training on rotary engined aeroplanes (I understand that they'd previously used mainly Albatros up to that point) I reasoned that it would have been quite heavily used, but went with 'new' rather than faded 4 colour lozenge because I suspect this heavy use would have been over quite a short period before the fabric had the chance to fade - well it's a theory  :-\

For those interested here are a few in progress shots of the build process -

Mike (Sandbager's) build of the larger Roden kit was enormously useful for sorting out some of the smaller details of the build. Details such as undercowl hatch and filler caps (?) were added using his build as reference. I wasn't happy with sit of the DR1's I've previously built and so trimmed the undercarriage legs slightly for this one. Combined with a new tailskid I think it looks better although the difference is quite subtle.

Just for fun here's a top view of the new DVI & DVII that I finished at the back of last year

Thanks for reading along.
Next up is another from the 'started shelf', but this time something British
Paul

That's lovely Paul, great work! This is a conversion I've often wondered about and you've done a great job. The finish is very pretty, too.

Lovely work all round Paul. The interior detail is really good and the build is as precise as always. The lozenge looks great and the overall finish looks great to these eyes.

Definitely something simpler next time!

Thanks Sandy. Right back to old Airfix conversions of yesteryear  ;)

Hiya Zac. Thanks mate, it's a nice one to add to the shelf and does look pretty done up in full lozenge  :)

Morning Nigel. Glad you like it.  :)
Not sure the next one is simpler, but I usually have a couple on the go so perhaps I'll dig out an 'easy' kit to keep the flow going . . .

Thanks Warren
I was only reminded how petite this one is compared to the DVII when I put them side by side  :)

One of many similar conversions done in Airfix magazine that I'm sure inspired many of us when younger . . .
