Eduard 1/48 Camel
« on: December 13, 2025, 01:32:26 AM »
The last one for the year... not sure I'm that satisfied but at least its done. I tried a new approach for the turning on the cowling which looked quite good but then the ink bled when I put a varnish over it. Oh well, there is an effect of sorts!

The main reason I thought I'd post is I used steel PE bracing wires. I've never used these before and was always dubious about them but when I saw AIMS has released a set for the Eduard Camel I thought I'd give it a go and people may be curious how it went.

Overall, the results are not bad. It looks the part in a way that is hard to achieve with elastic or monofilament.  They're not for the faint hearted however and there was a fair bit of colourful language used. I'm not convinced these would work so well in 1/32 or are necessary in 1/72, but for 1/48 it really does give a sense of these flat wires. They don't provide any structural strength but the model is pretty solid, so this isn't a problem. They are also quite rigid so I don't think they will sag over time -we will see. I have a 1/48 Swordfish in the stash, and may one day use the Tamiya PE bracing wires as well.

Merry Xmas all!

ps i haven't quite worked out how to display the propeller yet and need to tidy up some stary flock on the base.

Nice model to finish the year with  8)

Really like the PC10 colour and weathering on this one. Never tried the steel wires, but my models often get transported about to shows and the like and I understand from others that they don't like being moved about; that said I agree that in 1/48th the effect of 'flat' wires can be quite noticeable and certainly add something  :)

Merry Xmas and looking forward to the next one
Paul

p.s.
I had a similar issue with varnishing over the turned engine effect on an Eindekker. I lived with it for a while, but recently went back over the vanish with another coat of 'swirls' which looks better even if it's not as good as the pre-varnished effect  ::)
There cannot be a crisis today, my schedule is full

Lovely work, I agree with Paul that the finish and weathering is top notch, very effective and not overdone. A great way to end the year, do have a great Christmas.

I really like the result with the AIMS wires. I have a couple of those sets (Pup and Camel) because they are very realistic, but I foresee two problems. The first is the colour and shine, they are very bright. You seem to have overcome this - how did you finish the wires? Second, and more serious, is the one Paul mentions. I have never seen a model at a show with these wires that does not have at least one bent wire. As I display my models at shows, this is the main thing holding me back.

Superb work on the Eduard Camel, your build and finishing is spot on, with just the right degree of weathering!

I've been wondering about trying out etched rigging wires and it's good to see them in practice.

Cheers,
Mark

Just an idea. Could you flatten .004 inch nylon tippet by running it through a jewelry roller set at zero or near zero clearance between the rollers?  Would this flattened monofilament still fit 1/48th scale Gaspatch RAF resin fittings?

What a super model. I especially like the background and trestle - they give the model a different look. The PC10 shade is also excellent, as is the overall finish. One to be proud of.

Nicely done, Matt. Nice idea to have the prop removed, with the detail of the mount & bolts all showing.
Cheers!

Beautiful model.  I really like the shades of variation on the PC10 fabric.
