Blue Max Spad VII, 1/48.....
« on: August 25, 2025, 07:57:19 AM »
Georges Guynemer's SPAD VII S254 in 1/48 scale. A "Blue Max" kit, #104 issued in 1994.

A typical Blue Max kit, an added degree of difficulty as with any short run kit but accurate lines with unique markings available no where else in 1/48 scale.

Build Log here:   https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=15091.0

The bottom.

I recreated the louvers on the chin that I had to sand off with those nifty 3D printed ones from Archer. All other cowling detail added with a .005 fine tip pen.

Built almost entirely out of box I had to replace the kits wheels/tires as I somehow drilled the mounting hole off center on the kit ones. I replaced them with some Camel resin dupes I made.
The machine gun is a little proud, I attempted to fix it but the thought of knocking that upper wing off scared me enough to leave it alone.  Being out of box allowed me to use the beautiful quartz like kit windscreen with no vac forming my own. Not a contest winner as the interplane struts are a bit rough.

I was amazed I could not find aftermarket decals of Guynemers S254. I was thrilled these old Blue Max decals stayed together after decades of sitting in a box.
It's about the most colorful aircraft on the shelf and I now have a new appreciation for SPADs.

Thanks for following along.

Really enjoyed the build Allan and the result is lovely.  8)

Overall it's a sweet looking bird and who doesn't like a SPAD; they might be trickier than the average single seater, but always look good when painted up - congrats

That is a fantastic (and very quick!) job on a challenging kit. You did a great job on all those louvres and details, and the overall finish looks great, nice weathering. No wonder the machine gun is proud, it should be! ;) :)

Excellent finish!  I really enjoyed following the build log as well.  It?s inspired me to build a Spad myself.

Thanks everyone.
I'm still taking down and putting back kits and fondling plastic deciding what to do next....
Thanks,
