Phew....

Finally some progress. As Alexis said, these kits "are very changeling at times". Um, yea......

I discovered these nifty 3D louvers while building my Hannover CIII. I knew replacing these would be a pain but these seemed to do the trick. I cut them down to the width I needed.

After the kit putting up it's best against me, I now have some wings on and the end actually looks like it might happen with a SPAD on the shelf and not parts in the bin.

This is a milestone as I think it's pretty smooth sailing from here on. (Provided I don't do something stupid like whack the top wing off...)

Looking at the above photo, I'm going to change the color of the wheel covers to cowling color rather than CDL.

I can't quite figure out what exactly is wrong with the wings. The cabane struts should be a little closer to the leading edge. (See above photo) The forward landing gear strut should be forward of the leading edge not at it.

But ya know what, this will look just fine when done. You can not get these markings for S254 anyplace else but the Blue Max kit. I'll bet the SpecialHobby plastic is not all that much better...

More soon.

There may well be a few minor accuracy issues with these old and limited run kits. But you are doing a great job, this really is looking every inch a SPAD and thye paint and decal finish is excellent.

Just a quick update.

She is on her own feet...

I really wanted to do this all Blue Max but I somehow screwed up on one of the holes to mount the wheels, got it off center somehow, grabbed a set of my own resin cast from a Camel.

Rigging and prop. I still plenty of opportunities ahead of me to screw this up. The top wing has me real nervous, it's held on by just 12 itty bitty drops of superglue.

Looking very nice!

One question for the ignorant; were these SPADs left in clear doped linen with metal panels, or were they doped in a particular colour? I have seen many interpretations from a very light cream to more of a yellow, like you have done Allan. Am just asking for a friend....  ;D

Hey Brad,
My original go-to for CDL was the Vallejo Beige right out of the bottle. That is FS33695, I can't remember were i got that FS number but that color has worked for me for years. For this build after looking at the original airframe and other CDL finishes. I decided to change my pallet a bit.

FS33695

Examples I used as refence.

So now my new go-to will be this recipe. 20 drops beige, 5 drops wood. The pic below is not accurate, the SPAD pics are closer.

For all the painted metal panels I am using Vallejo "UK Light Stone". No FS number.

Hope this helps your friend....
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

Fantastic work Allan!  I really like your choice of color for the fabric.  Really nice rigging as well.
