MPM HB W29 and other
« on: February 25, 2013, 09:45:26 AM »
Hi all

As somebody new to this forum I thought I post some photos of whats currently on my workbench:

The Brandenburg W29 is the MPM (upgraded) kit which I picked up cheap at a show a long time ago. I built the Toko kit many many years ago and made a hacking mess of it and so instead of trying to improve on the original Toko kit I chose to build the MPM kit as a replacement.

The kit is not at all bad but like all limited run kits needs some leg work to get the best out of it. The Lozenge is courtesy of Pegasus decals and was a joy to use. The MPM floats are not as good as the Toko floats so the intention is to use the floats from my original Toko model. I am also in the process of upgrading the Spandaus using some etched brass cooling jackets from my spares box.

The second (very none aviation related......sorry) subject is the venerable Airfix WW1 tank with the reasonably recent female sponsons. The kit is being converted to a (hopefully) more accurate Mark 1 appearance (as the kit was mistakenly based on a Mark II). In addition to the mods which are well documented in many sources I found I needed to build up some of the edges underneath the track with strips of plasticard to avoid the track sloping sideways at an angle. The original soft rubber type track (which is the poorest part of the kit) is currently being replaced with tracks made from plasticard. New rivets are simulated with blobs of PVA.

Interesting that I still get that very special feeling when building an Airfix kit.

Cheers

Dave

Outstanding progress on both, Dave.  The Pegasus lozenge on the W.29 looks brilliant.  Great job on the application.  I'm looking forward to seeing the Mark I completed.  I gotta ask, do you have the Airfix Western Front/Trench diorama kit?  Although I don't do armour or dioramas, I was tempted to buy it a while back just because it looks like so much fun.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi Bud

No I don't have the trench set, I don't think I would have anywhere big enough to put. My son had the D-Day set and I was quite impressed with the vacformed diorama that came the that set.

With Regards to the Airfix kit, I have a Female and Male kit. The plan is to make the Female as a Mark I, The Male as a Mark II and use the the Wilson's epicyclic gear steering parts from the Male kit in a scratchbuild of Little Willie.

As you can probably tell I'm in Austerity mode at the moment.

Cheers

Dave

Nice work. Your MkI looks like a terrific upgrade on that veteran kit. Looking forward to paint on it.
