Completed - the 2025 "Aces Mounts" Group Build!
« on: July 20, 2025, 07:32:48 AM »
Hello all!

Registered members of the Forum are invited to participate in the "Aces Mounts 2025" Group Build, our second group build for the year!

The Group Build starts on Friday 01 August 2025, and finishes on Monday, 15 December 2025, giving participants a four and a half month build timeframe.

In the spirit participation and encouragement, there will be no prizes. The idea here is to come together as a WW1 modelling community, and support each other in fun environment.

Like the last group build, I will be running the build logs for this one on the "Under Construction" board, instead of creating a new board elsewhere on the site. That should maximise exposure and participation in the group build. Finished builds can then be posted under the "Completed Models" section.

Group Build Rules:

1.   The group build is open to all registered members of the forum. Members from all skill levels are encouraged to enter.

2.    Your entry may be an aircraft flown by an Ace of the 1914-1918 conflict. An ?Ace? is considered as any pilot with five or more confirmed victories to their credit.

4.   Any scale smaller than 1/1 scale is permitted.

5.   Any building medium is permitted.

6.   You can enter as many times as you like.

7.   The model may be started, or unstarted.

8.   Add your selected subject as a response to this thread; that way I can track who has entered and what has been entered (helps me compile the summary of the Group Build at the end).

Posting Rules:

9.   As per the last group build, build log should be started as a new topic on the "Under Construction" board.

10.   Please prefix your build log with the title "Aces Mounts 2025 GB". For example, if you were building a 1/48 Fokker Dr1, the title of your build log should read "Aces Mounts 2025 GB - Fokker Dr1". That way we can easily track which threads relate to the Group Build and which do not.

11.   Once your model is completed, please also post pictures of the finished model in the "Completed Models" board, again utilising the group build prefix as above but with the term "completed" added into the title, i.e. "Aces Mounts 2025 GB - Completed Fokker Dr1". Please also ensure you link your build log to the completed models post.

I know there's a few rules here, but hopefully nothing too complicated. Do let me know if there are any questions or clarifications needed.

I will pin this thread for the duration of the group build, and add to this thread at the completion of the group build with a summary post of the final completions.

That's the briefing chaps! Goggles on, switches off, chocks away and build on, wot!

Cheers,

Brad C

Oh yum......
Thanks Brad, this will be a good show.
I've wanted to do Campbell's Nieuport 28 as his is the first "American" ace. I would like to sort out Vallejo paints  with the 28's so I can do a proper job on Rickenbacker's SPAD XIII.

There is an excellent chance I will build the Glencoe 28 along with the Roden 28 as another 94th ace as a dual build.

So looking forward to this, Thanks bunches Brad....
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

7.   The model may be started, or unstarted.

Excellent news! I've just started Lothar von Richthofen's all-red Fokker DVII (his "beautiful red bird"), I will hold off posting any in progress photos until August 1st.

That will be my "official" entry, I am also hoping I can fit in a build of the Nieuport 28 flown by Huffer/Rickenbacker in the time frame of the GB.

Thanks Brad

I?m in and will have a crack at completing 2.

1. Buddecke?s E. III 96/15 in Turkish markings, Dardanelles

2. Lt Armand de Turenne?s Nieuport 11, Escadrille N48

Both are Eduard 1/48.

I have 3 already on the bench - it would be nice to finish one or 2 before I start on these!

Cheers
Matt

Great choices Matt, some interesting subjects!

Still pondering what I might build myself... if I ever get around to making the time to build something, hah!

Cheers and keep the submissions coming chaps!

I know I've still got the Triplane on the bench, but after spending time repairing models I'm in need of a little pick me up or two  ;D

Given the Central Powers air force was heavily affected by the crashing down of the glass shelf (and I just bought a bundle of Pegasus kits) I'll start with Dieter Collins Albatros D1 since I have some Print Scale decals for it. The plan is to keep it nice and simple rather than dwell too much and I'll lean heavily on the research and information in Mike (Sandbagger)'s helpful build thread  ;)

That should mean I can add an early British aircraft as well. Given the number of Be2 kits I have knocking about I'll build the single seat versions flown by Frederick Sowrey who shot to fame as the vanquisher of Zeppelin L32.

There's a nice connection between these two aircraft (at least the way I plan to build them) which I'll elaborate on during the construction threads

This will be my first time taking part in a group build.  I?m thinking of building a Hansa Brandenburg D1 ( Eastern Express) probably one of Frank Linke-Crawfords, but there are a few others that could be in contention as well - depends which markings I can source!

I can't promise anything just yet due to increased activity in the wee Buckles production line, but If I do find time to enter, it will be Roden's 1/32 Noop 28C.1 in Campbell's livery.
Fingers X

Cheers
Bob  ;)

Never having posted here before, it is with no small amount of trepidation I?m putting my hand up for this.  I have started a WnW SE.5a which I?m doing as Arthur Rhys-Davids machine at or around the time of his fight with Werner Voss.  I trust this is suitable?

Cheers,

Ian

I?m interested in this one Brad. A quick question though. Does the aircraft have to have been flown by the Ace in combat? IE contributed to their Ace designation or could it be one known to have been piloted in non combat operation?  I have to research a little more but supposedly MVR had an Albatros C. XV as a personal hack.

Great question Tim - I would consider anything flown by the ace (including before they achieved ace status, or something they didn't fly in combat) still qualifies as an "aces mount" :)

Looking forward to seeing the C.XV!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Brad!
I think drinking will soon be out of the question once I have paid for and collected this beast! I test rode her today and knew I would bite.

Back on a decent Big Beautiful Beemer again.

Cheers,
Beemer Bob  ;D
