McCudden SE.5a.....
« on: May 05, 2025, 02:44:53 AM »
I'm confused...
This mornings rabbit hole brings me to James McCudden's SE.5a. I want to do the airframe he was using in his encounter with Voss.
Most depictions are of B4891 but I found this...

"Following the battle with Voss, McCudden received a new S.E.5a, B4891, on which he used his extensive mechanical knowledge to improve the engine, giving it special high-compression pistons and supervising a meticulous rebuild which gave the airplane an additional 4,000 feet of combat ceiling."

So what was he using and what markings? SE.5 or SE.5a?

Apparently 4891 had the 4 blade, spinner and #6, 4863 had 4 blade and "G". Why is 4863 so often depicted without white border on upper roundels? Are roundels inboard or outboard? Short stubby exhaust or long? Do we have photos?

Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

Sorry, I think I answered my own question...

I can see a white border on inboard roundels on the upper wing, stubby exhaust, 4 blades, metal landing gear.
Thanks,
