1/32 WNW Sopwith Camel F.1 - 'Wop' May
« on: May 01, 2025, 07:50:06 PM »
Haven't built a Camel for a while because I built a whole raft of them in 1/48 some years ago based on the Blue Max kit - and used up all the best colour schemes, to my eye. However I need at least one in my 1/32 cabinet, so, what to build?

Initially I wanted to do Roy Brown's MvR killer (yes, I adhere to that line of thought!), but I have a thing about the naked appearance of aircraft missing national insignia in the usual places. Photo evidence shows B7270 sans roundels on fuselage at time of shooting down Richthofen. (I also won't build Nieuports with bare upper wings!)

However much the same markings without the wing stripes but with the essential fuselage roundels were worn by MvR's intended victim 'Wop' May on D3328, with the added personalisation of his moniker 'Wop' on the port side and his girlfriend Lucy's name on the right.

(A couple of the guys in the club are engineers and tell me the plumbers' adage is "Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosy" and insist Lucy's name should be on the left!)

Anyway, nice kit although a little fiddly in many places - that damned cabane rigging 'bullet' for example. Enjoyed building it until rigging stage when I had a problem with my pre-coloured fishing line losing tension after completion. I've never had this before an can only assume the alu paint was responsible. I'll be very careful next time. Anyway a lot of cutting installed lines, catching with new thread and re-rigging. Not 100% happy with final result, but it's going on the shelf now.

Looking for a figure for young Mr May now.
Sandy

Thanks Nigel, I really enjoyed the kit until the last stage, when lots of annoying things happened with the rigging and I just wanted it finished. I was tempted to start on a 2F.1 immediately having found the niggly bits, but I think I'll have a complete change. The Lukgraph 1/32 resin Alb C.III is calling to me!

Nice looking Camel, Sandy. Congrats on a superb replica of Wop Mays aircraft. He grew up in Edmonton Alberta and was active flying in the area after the war. A piece of MvRs triplane (part of a strut) was donated by his family to the local museum here.
Cheers,
Gary

Lovely work Sandy! Have always had a mind to building this scheme and you've certainly done it justice. Well done!

Sandy,

That's a wonderful model Camel you have put together there, mate - I hope the kit did not give you the 'hump' !!

Nice to see a different but still relatively well known Camel. I would never have guessed that you had any problems with this one - the finish and rigging are first class.

Stephen.

Awesome Camel. Especially love the undercarriage shot. Very nice paint job.

A beautiful Camel.
I also had a problem with sagging fishing line (0.12mm) some time ago.
At that time I painted it with Tamiya Aluminum XF-16, thinned with Tamiya Thinner X-20A.
Perhaps I had used too much thinner, in any case I had to redo almost all the tensioning,
because retensioning with a slightly heated scalpel blade was not successful.

Anyway, back to your Camel:
Your F.1 Camel looks quite nice, finely built model.
