1/24 scale race car models...

After a long hiatus from model building, I stopped about age 15 and started working on one to one real cars,
In addition to flying, auto racing has always been a passion of mine since I was a kid. My brother had Mickey Mantle on the wall, I had the three John Wyre Gulf Porches.
Back in the late 70's, I purchased for cheap my first race car, a Crossle 16F Formula Ford.


I was absolutely broke at the time but scrounged enough money to race. In the paddock I was surrounded by beautiful vintage race cars that I knew I would never have the funds to own, Ferrari 250GTO, Ford Cobra Daytona, Porsche 917, etc..

BUT.....

I figured for $13.00 I can go down to the hobby shop and get my very own Ford GT40 and I did.

My favorite racing is Le Mans. Almost all of these are cars that competed in the 24hrs of Le mans. As with the a/c, they are modeled post-race with grime and weathering.

I am also a classic car nut, used to own a 1971 Alfa 1750 GTV. Never raced but I have done various track days and love watching classic car racing. I'm really glad you are still out there giving it some on track!

Those builds look fantastic. Lovely work all round and some gorgeous cars.

Nigel you just sent me down an Alfa 1750 GTV rabbit hole for the last hour. I have a '68 MGB/GT that I would trade in a heartbeat for the GTV but they go for twice as much.

Hey Allan those models are fabulous - they are so realistic with the level of finish & display. Such an interesting twist that you love racing, too. Thanks for including those pics. You also mention flying? What types have you flown? I ask because I did a bit myself in my 20's.

Nigel you just sent me down an Alfa 1750 GTV rabbit hole for the last hour. I have a '68 MGB/GT that I would trade in a heartbeat for the GTV but they go for twice as much.

My first ever car was a white MGB GT, chrome bumpers and wire wheels. Lovely, but I can confirm the Alfa 1750 GTV is worth the extra money.......

Nigal, I recognised Goodwood right away as I spend way too much time on youtube watching vintage Goodwood racing.
Gary, just after high school I had an older friend who flew for Fed-Ex and we would often rent a Cessna 150 on weekends and he taught me to fly.
The last I flew was in the early 2000's as a glider pilot. Just as technologically challenging as racing but much, much quieter.

Very cool photos Allan - gliding is such a "pure" form of flying. For me it was Cessna 150's and 172s, but when Dad bought an Aeronca Champ I got checked out in that...what a difference trying to fly a tail-dragger!

The Champ must have been very cool.
Try flying a tail dragger with only one wheel.
My much better half Su has a completely understandable aversion to flying in aircraft that have no propellers or engines, once was quite enough, thank-you......

There are some cars I'd quite like to model, particularly Formula 1 from the 1980s and 1990s, but I find the painting and decalling really daunting. It's great to see someone else do it, and do it so well!
