Meng 1/32 Fokker DR-1 corrected?
« on: March 20, 2025, 01:40:09 AM »
I've been away for awhile and I was think about getting the Meng 1/32 DR-1 and was wondering if they had ever corrected the wing and cockpit cowling breakage issues?

I'm aware that this issues can be overcome by most modelers, but because of the amount of complaints Meng must have received, prompted them to alter the molds etc.

Thanks!,

Chuck

I had both these 'problems' with my first Meng Dr.I, Chuck and I think it crazy that it has been massively overstated.

The cockpit area breakage was clean and only meant I had to glue two pieces in place rather than one.
The banana wing took about twenty minutes of vigorous bending to re-establish a flat plane. I put it in some hot water then bent it past the required straight profile. I kept doing this several times, quite forcibly, then left over a day or two to see if it would revert - but it didn't.

This is a minor problem: I have three more of these kits and will have no qualms or worries when I start the next one.

I agree with Sandy as to the easy fixes. I didn't even Mess with Hot water on My 3. That being said the cockpit area break was only present in 1 out of 3. The wing was warped in all 3 but at least the second two seemed to be a bit less warped. It is easy to forget that the WNW Albatros suffered from varying degrees of warpage also. Just as easy to fix.

Just to answer the question, it was never corrected. I think the problem was more with the way the sprues were packed in the box rather than the moulds. I've built 2 and got a third in the stash, none had the broken cockpit part, all had warped wings which like Sandy and Rick said is an easy fix.

On my trio, all of the wing sprues have arches with vertical pins that extend about 4mm beyond the lower edges of the sprue. I believe that this is what causes the wing warping- upon removal from the mold and cooling, I suppose.

Thanks guys for the responses.

Having read some reviews from when the kit was originally released, I was aware of the fixes needed to make the correction.

So, the bottom line is that Meng hasn't corrected the "issues" with the kit. I guess they would rather send out replacement sprues to those requesting them then to make the needed corrections.
