Fokker Streaking - Base Color question
« on: January 17, 2025, 11:43:44 AM »
Hi everyone

I'm at the stage with my Meng DR1 1/24 build where I need to think (and practise) Fokker streaking. I am planning on Rudolf Klimkes scheme for Jasta 27.

Couple of quick questions firstly I have learnt a lot from the streaking thread on this forum started by RAGIII its great ( and thanks to all who contributed) but it seems everyone applies a light beige or similar as a base colour. Through my admittedly limted research it seems that the originals may have been applied over the base blue colour which in this case I plan on using Tamiya XF23 with some lightening by adding XF3 white to.

So why not just apply the light blue to the whole airframe and the streaking on top of that, why introduce a new color?

Second question is the yellow used by Jasta 27. Again I plan on using Tamiya XF3 yellow with the smallest touch of red, I've tried some tests and I am amazed how little red is needed like 1 drop red in 30 of yellow. But in some articles i have read it suggests a much higher ratio which makes the yellow very 'orangey'. Any experience on this.

I am not sure there is a definitive answer to either the above as a lot boils down to intrpretation, your own 'eye' and there seems to be not much source material.

Thanks You

I guess the only answer is that we don't really know. My opinion is that the two F1 aircraft were a blue base overall. The production aircraft had a Linen doped color as the base for the Streaking. In the end I guess you will need to make the most informed decision that you can JMHO,

Hi RAGIII

that's the thread that you started and I referenced..it's fantastic....I think I'm going to go with applying straight onto the light blue, I read an article recently where they had an original piece of fabric from Richtofens aircraft and the colour was applied onto the blue base, I also don't know why they would apply another colour in the real world...whatever was quickest and added as little extra weight would seem to be the drivers but as you said who knows !

FWIW I used the same methods as RAGIII on mine (ie a linen base for production aircraft although blue on the earlier pre-production aircraft)

As you mention quickest and easiest would be to apply the streaking to the basic fabric of the aircraft which would be linen and only apply the blue to the under-surfaces. Richtofen's aircraft was one of the pre-production aircraft hence the blue undercoat.

As you say no one really knows for sure so use whatever you feel comfortable with and enjoy it  ;D

Look forward to seeing the model

Paul

ps An old signwriting trick for transparent colours like yellow is to add a tiny amount of silver which makes it more opaque  ;)

Don't apply blue as a base colour unless you are doing an F1. This is definitely wrong as far as we know. All production DrIs had blue undersides and you can see the "return" along the fuselage edge where this colour wrapped around the streaked finish and it is clearly a different colour from the linen under the streaking.

As to whether the F1s were blue overall or not, we have no conclusive evidence. IMO they weren't but I wouldn't disagree with anyone that feels they were.

All the above are correct. There is some very good, well researched literature out there that belongs in everyones library or hard drive.

Hunt up this book, good stuff in it....

Indeed, F-101,102, and 103 were finished in the Silver/blue/green streak finish. Production a/c were light blue below, beige and green/brown above.

I used these and other eye witness accounts for my Voss/F103 build.

I don't EXACTLY remember were/how I came up with these colors for the production a/c but I found them somewhere.

Hope this helps. Scroll through the "Specific Builds" section of the Dr1, great stuff there.
Thanks,

Thanks for the advice everyone ...which I will follow...I'll apply a different base colour for the streaking and leave the blue for the underside.

I'm assuming I'll apply the blue first then do the streaking. I've also noticed it looks like you don't mask off the top and bottom just leaving a :natural' brush stroked edge...off to practise!

Thanks also for the tip with adding silver to yellow..will give that a try.

thanks once again

dinor, I have also had friends tell me to prime with pink when painting yellow. Yeah, I know it sounds strange, but several friends assure me it works.
