Another CSM Nieuport 11 Early 1/32
« on: January 11, 2025, 03:57:00 AM »
Jorgo beat me to it! I am also building the CSM early Nieuport 11 in the Escadrille 3 scheme of Georges Raymond. The kit is so lovely I could not resist it. This will be a "quick" out of the box build but to be honest the kit is so good it doesn't need any extras. I have the lovely 3D engine which is supplied with preorders. This is superb, although a couple of the push rods were distorted because they got attached to the cylinders during the printing process. This won't be an issue though as they will be hidden under the cowling.

Here's a few pics of the engine:

The intake pipes are painted with copper printer's ink, a tip I picked up from David Lane. This gives a very realistic finish.

I've painted all the wood parts of the interior so there won't be any more updates until the oils have dried. This should be by early next week.....

Beautifully chlorinated Le Rhone, Nigel! I totally agree with you, the kit is so good it can be built oob. And thanks for the tip with copper printer's ink.
I'm looking forward to your next update.
Cheers

Super job on the engine, Nigel. I'd discussed the whole "printers ink" thing with David a while back, but gave up trying to source any here in western Canada. His use of it on figures worked out so well. Would you have a brand and source for the ink you used here?
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks very much Paul, Joerg, Ben and Gary. The quality of CSM's 3D printing is up there with GasPatch IMO.

Joerg, we appear to be racing each other ;) I'm looking forward to your next updates as well  :)

I'm fortunate that David displays with the Great War SIG quite often so I have learned so much from him. I noticed that some of his engine details really stood out and he explained that he used printer's inks for this (and also that he uses them in a similar way on figures). A great tip.

I source mine from El Greco Miniatures in the UK here: https://www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk/collections/printers-inks . Gene, I'm afraid I don't know of any sources in the US.

Cranfield printer ink is available in the USA. Here is a link.  https://www.dickblick.com/products/cranfield-traditional-relief-ink/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3Dcranfield%20trsditional%20relief%20ink%20copper  You can buy a set of copper, gold, and silver or purchase separately. The colors are listed alphabetically. The traditional printer ink is oil based. They are manufactured in the UK.

Thanks very much Monty, Dan and Andreas. More updates soon - I've been away this weekend but my oils were drying anyway.

That's one beautiful motor, NigelR. Thanks for the tip on the printer's inks! I'll definitely be watching this one.
