WnW Fokker Eindecker E.1
« on: October 30, 2024, 08:25:56 AM »
After cracking open my WnW Fokker Eindecker E.1 last September, I've finally got a few pictures to share of the build. Again - some of the contributors to this forum have helped immensely with putting the project together so far. Although I'm cutting a few corners here and there. And I've had to make repairs & adjustments to the work so far because I don't look closely enough at my references the first time around.

The aircraft will be 13/15 which was flown by both Boelcke and Immelmann, and I wanted my fourth Eindecker to be completely straw-yellow coloured as shown in the optional schemes.

Cheers,
Gary

The cockpit assembly with seat hearness from HGW. The turnbuckles had to be moved after researching their correct location after this was photographed. Luckily I'd used the etched metal ones which I was later able to slide into their proper position.

I used ANYZ 3D printed switch handles on the panel.

The wing root part was beefed up with some scrap plastic as per discussion on this before cementing the fuselage halves together.

I pre-shaded some lines on the fuselage before painting on the dark yellow base colour.

I took several attempts to paint the turned aluminum finish, since my pattern kept changing as I attempted to keep it consistent. I had to overspray the bad areas again with dark Aluminum and re-paint the squiggles with chrome enamel a few times.

To get the undercarriage correctly aligned before painting, it was positioned and glued on the fuselage.

Nice to see this one on the go Gary. An excellent start, a very smart interior and control panel. The machining swirls look very effective, I hear what you say about keeping the patterns consistent, it can be challenging. So it was worth the effort you put in there because the end result looks great.

Your E.I is coming together beautifully, gemundson. Very impressive work in the cockpit, on the metal bits, and preshaded finish on the fuselage. Really looking forward to seeing your progress on this one!

Oh my that looks very pretty! I am still too scared to try my hand at those turned metal cowlings  :o  Yours have come up very nicely.

Everywhere I look I see beautiful Fokker Monoplanes . . .makes me want to dig out that EIV ;)

Great work so far Gary. Any clue about the scheme you've chosen?

Gorgeous work, Gary, this is looking to end up as good if not better than your E.IV... are you doing another article to go along with this one? Hope so.

All best,

Dutch

Thanks to all who have commented - much appreciated.

Thanks Paul - I'm doing the Option D from the instruction sheet which will be the straw-yellow scheme on the wings & fuselage.

Thanks, Dutch - I'm taking a few photos of this build to possibly send off an article to Brett Green when I complete the project. Since this is the fourth WnW Eindecker I would be possibly putting an article together for, I have to live with the possibility that it would be somewhat repetitive and there may not be a need for it...we'll see  ;)

I've been slowly working through weathering the fuselage and correcting the aircraft number (263 instead of 262) and adding a few etched metal turnbuckles to the control lines below the cockpit.
Cheers!

Very nice progress! Just out of curiosity and as you gained experience when you built four of them: Have you had any problems with dropping wings on the Eindeckers? It was (/is?) a notorious problem with the 1:48 eduard kits.

Thanks again, Nigel. Have fun at SMW  ;)

Thanks Andreas. I've never specifically had this problem on my previous three builds...and have just added the wings to this build yesterday. But following the recent builds by Mike, Prze, Dutch & NigelR there was a suggestion to "beef up" the anchor points of the WnW kit to prevent "wing droop" wing joints - which I did. I added a chunk of thick plastic to part A-18 to solidify that part to which the wing tabs are secured.

Cheers,
Gary

With the wings attached, I added the landing gear and worked my way through the rigging process. Although I'd rigged a few of these models before, I still rely on the detailed walk-around photos posted by James Fahey of the Eindecker in New Zealand to show exactly where the cables go...or try to see where I'd put them on my old builds. The instruction guide for rigging these models leaves a lot to be desired. Still adding touches of weathering as I go (that won't be completed until the very end).
Cheers,
Gary

Just catching up. Fantastic work. Maybe next aluminum squiggle job you can try the AK real markers, not that yours look bad - they look great but curious about the control the markers may provide.

Thanks Steve. Interesting suggestion about the markers - I've never seen them. Wonder how fine the tips are?
