Revell 1/32nd scale Spitfire Mk. IIa. 19 squadron RAF
« on: August 22, 2024, 10:12:14 AM »
I have recently completed an almost OOB build of the Revell Spitfire Mk. IIa. Mods were pretty much confined to the interior, especially the HGW seatbelts. A couple of firsts for Me were:
1. I used MLT 400 for the first time thinning Tamiya Acrylics
2. First time Not Glossing before applying Decals. ( Just used Micro Set before, and Micro Sol after)

What a gorgeous plane, Rick! Is this the same Revell kit I built in 1967... ? Sure don't look much like mine did; IIRC I used Testor's square bottle enamels and brush painted it.

Thanks Dutch and No, Not the same kit. This is a Newer Mold with better details. That being said there are some Accuracy issues. Some are easy to fix, others not so much. At about $20.00 to $30.00 US dollars if you search it is an extremely good deal!

PS: I also did that original Revell $1.50 expensive kit as a Young Modeler. It wasn't pretty  ::)

Looks stunning RAGIII  ;D Weathering and colors captured just right.

The leveling thinner is a bottle of magic. I use it for pretty much all my airbrushing. Works well with Tamiya, Mr Hobby, AK realcolor, Hataka etc

It appears to be missing its top wing, but apart from that this is a really nice build....

The whole glossing before decals is a bit of a myth it turns out (unless it's Avaittic of course)

Beautiful Spitfire, Rick, nicely made. That new mould Revell kit is a real bargain, such an improvement on the old BoB one.
The Mk IX is a great steal too.

Masterbox did a good (cheap) set of figures that complement the Spit (and Hurri) nicely, BTW, but not sure if still available.  :)

(Not my best work, early, must re-paint them - but just posted here to illustrate.)

I like MLT too although I always wear a mask as the smell is quite strong.
I found it didn't work though with Vallejo or AK - curdled. The surprise was it actually works well with Humbrol enamels, if you ever need to spray them. (Ages to dry though!)

Very nicely done Rick, I'm especially drawn to the finish, you've really "aced" it! This makes me want to get at my Kit but I need to complete my contribution to our Memorial Group Build first. BTW, how did you do the canopy frames, masks and if so your own?? Really lovely work!
Cheers,
Lance

I agree with Nigel Rick - there is a wing missing somewhere....and the prop is in the wrong position!!

That is a super model - the finish is one to die for. It may be OOB but I would be very pleased to have that in my display cabinet.

Stephen.

Nice job, Rick. Love the look of those early Spitfires, and your model has captured it well.
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks to all for the Comments. They are appreciated! Lance, I used a commercial aftermarket Mask.  I will PM when I can with a photo.
