RNAS airship drawings etc
« on: August 18, 2024, 03:58:54 AM »
Does anyone know of anywhere I might be able to find drawings of British airships operated by the RNAS in the First World War (thinking mainly in terms of the Sea Scout Zero Class, but also interested in the BE2c-based SS, Coastal Class and Coastal Star Class)?

I've found a number of general arrangement pictures in several of the books I own on the subject but everything I have found so far is very limited in detail and of uncertain scale fidelity.

Detail photos are quite hard to come by too.

If anyone knows of anything or has any ideas of avenues to investigate, that would be great 🙂

I'm sure there's folks here on the forum who can provide more specific info, but in the interim you might scan through some of the back issues of Cher Ami, the best online magazine dealing with Great War subjects:

https://sites.google.com/site/greatwarsig/Resources

It's published by the Great War SIG of the IPMS (UK) and Alan Pask, one of the regular contributors, has written several articles on his scratchbuilt British airships, including, IIRC, the Coastal class and SS types. There's a lot of overlap between this group and the GWSIG, so maybe someone can get you more information on his sources.

Good hunting,

Dutch

Windsock International have excellent GA's of an SS BE2c but I couldn't tell you what one. I have it but cannot guarantee I can find it. The book Battlebags has several profiles and plans of British Airships including 2 view plans of an SS Zero.
The New Vanguard publication of British Airships also has profiles of RNAS airships.
Alan.
I heard that it all started when a bloke called Archie Duke shot an ostrich 'cause he was hungry!

Many thanks Dutch and Alan.

Cher Ami looks to be a great resource - I can't quite believe I hadn't seen it before now!

I shall have to look into the Windsock International GAs.

Thank you both  - some great pointers!
