Portable spray booth
« on: August 07, 2024, 01:16:40 PM »
Greetings...
Not sure if I've selected the right thread for this topic, if the site moderators feel it should be moved then please do so.
In the attempt to make a long story short, after several years of a "non-assembly" status I'm closing in on completing a remodel of the Raum des Vielen Fluchens.  My plan is to add a table top spray booth so as to bring most of my spray painting/airbrushing inside (have been spraying in my non temperature controlled garage using my city supplied recycling container as my work surface... the City Recycling Engineers must wonder on their bi-monthly pick up why the lid on my can keeps changing colors?).
I'm hoping to get some opinions/recommendations from anyone who may be using one of these spray booth setups.  My latest MicroMark catalog only shows a couple of options (width is an issue, I will have to stay under 24"...) made by MicroLux which I imagine is the house brand?   I've also contacted Mr. Bezos who has some recommendations (Master Airbrush looks promising).
Anyone have practical experience recommendations, good or bad opinions with a particular brand?
Thank you in advance, I appreciate any and all feedback.
Take care
Scott...

Yes, I use the same one as Nigel.
It's under 17 inches wide and I took the carry-handle off as it sits on the side of my desk permanently with the hose up and out the window in use. But it does unclip and fold up quite easily if required. The fan is quite noisy in operation, but I just turn the music up a bit!

I bought it at a show a few years ago for 60GBP incl the LED lighting. The hose perished fairly quickly but a replacement tumble-drier vent hose off ebay was only a fiver. You get proprietory replacement fibre filter pads but they are expensive and, again, ebay provided a roll of the stuff for a couple of pounds, which will provide me with replacements for years to come.

Only problem, as you can see, is it gets cluttered up all the time and has to be emptied before use!

Sandy

PS Edit: I think the integrated LED lighting is worth having as it takes no space, offers uniform lighting and switches on with the fan.

I have the one Nigel mentiones too.

The problem of the lack of light can be easily solved by sticking an adhesive strip of leds on the appropiate area. The are cheap and do the job.

Sandy and Willem,
I really like the booth y'all have! If I ever replace my current set up, this is what I'd get if it can be found in the U.S.

FWIW, this is what I bought many, many moons ago when there wasn't much available for spray booths: https://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Rev2/1401-1500/rev1426-spraybooth-Cook/00.shtm

Much more pricey that Sandy's or Willem's, but it does get the job done.

I see they've created a smaller version, but with the same power to pull fumes: https://www.mr-hobby.com/en/product3/category_4/2574.html

I'd say both of these might be more expensive, BUT they might fit your situation better.

HTH!  YMMV!

For what it's worth, I have that same booth that Sandy shows (without most of the accumulated stuff).  After using it for a dozen or so times, the fan quit.  And I couldn't figure out how to make it go again.  (was sad, because it was a gift from my wife).  Since then, I've replaced it but no longer have a good area carved out for it in my workshop.  So I brush paint everything that can't be done with a spraycan in the garage.

Just a story.

Thank you all for the input on the portable spray booth, and thank you Sandy for the visuals (is that an old Yamaha receiver I see sitting on top of your tool case?). I'm still evaluating but do like the idea of the built in lights.  Who knows, once I make a selection and put it in place I may be looking at getting a new airbrush (what's that they say about 'all solutions...').
Thanks again.
Take care
