Best wood species for making scale propellers?
« on: May 23, 2024, 05:28:06 AM »
What types of wood meet the criterion for straight small grain, suitable color, strength, and ease of shaping? Which species are compatible when combining two types for laminated props?

Boxwood or lime or holly all minimal grain. Lime is the softest of the lot there. If you want to do laminations  in a darker wood I would er on the side of dyeing one of these (probably the lime as it will take the stain better as it's softer) Most darker woods tend to have a coarser grain. Scalewise the grain should not be visible or maybe just a little highlighting with a brush and some oils. I presume we are talking 1/48 or 1/32 scale ?
