Wow, this looks amazing. Incredible how scale modelling limits keep being pushed. Brilliant!

Cheers

New Tool Mercedes D.IIIa -- 1/32 Lower End Tear Down
« Reply #3 on: August 19, 2024, 09:53:05 AM »
This is a dry, press-fit only -- hence some misalignment of the cylinders. Also, the crankcase upper and lower halves in these photos are preproduction, and are missing some important details already corrected and added.

1/16 version is following close behind. 1/48 version also in the works.

I hope you've got the correct thread on those engine block bolts, otherwise it would ruin it for me. 😅

1/16 Mercedes D.IIIa -- snaek peek
« Reply #6 on: August 22, 2024, 07:56:23 PM »
Development prototype of the all new tool Mercedes D.IIIa in 1/16 scale next to the 1/32 scale variant (also in development). Like it's smaller sibling, the 1/16 version will have extensive internal parts.

And here is the 1/16 variant next to the offerings from Model Airways (Albatros DVa), which it is primarily intended to replace...

Hi Ed!
I'm hoping the first (early?) variant will be ready in October for 1/32 & 1/16. No timeline yet for 1/48. I haven't figured out the price points yet, as I haven't "productionized" a lot of the parts so it's still unclear how much machine time, material and my post time is involved for each kit. Also I'm looking into packaging & instruction options.  The internal bits will be optional, as I assume many people won't care about them.

I will be doing the later style crankcase (with generator drive and flange) as a follow on.

1/5 Scale Mercedes D.IIIa Flugmotor

I occasionally get inquiries about really large scale bits. I've had an opportunity this summer to experiment with 1/5 scale versions of my Mercedes D.IIIa bits. Here is a crack at the upper crankcase half:

Meanwhile work continues on the "regular" scale Mercedes bits...

Carburetor:

Magneto:

Timing Tower:

It seems this sub-board is set to self-destruct imminently, so -- until then -- it's been nice knowing you!

Exploding view of the Mercedes D.IIIa in its current state. (A much better, clearer and longer video is on my Patreon and will be unlocked for the general public in a few days.)

Thanks for looking :)

1/48 will follow right on the heels of 1/32 & 1/16. Obviously it will be simplified somewhat. My plan was to scale it to the Eduard Albatros D.V...
