Douglas PD-1. 1/72 Esoteric vaccuform
« on: March 25, 2024, 07:52:31 AM »
I’ve been busy with this project the last several weeks. Now time to get back to WWI!

The PD-1 was a mid twenties development of the famous Felixstowe flying boats of WWI. The US Naval Aviation Factory subcontracted production to Douglas (PD-1), Martin (PM-1), and Keystone (PK-1).  There were many variations of hull design and engine modifications. These aircraft were in use till the late 1930’s.  My model is an early version with the wooden hull and fabric covered flying surfaces. It carries eight 100lb practice bombs.

Build log is located on the 1/72 Hyperscale page
Thanks for looking in!

Tim

Gorgeous! This really is a stunning model, and from my second-favorite period, the Silver/Yellow Wings era no less...

Well that's an interesting bird. You can see the WW1 lineage so I can understand why you were drawn to it. Never tried one of the esoteric vacs, but they seem to have quite a nice selection and this one is a great advert for their wares  8)
Fabulous

Very nice, I once had an Esoteric vac and it looked pretty good quality. You did a great job on this.

VERY  nicely done Tim! I have always had a great interest in the "Yellow Wings" years and subjects and this is a beautiful representation of the era. I'm curious, what did you rig her with?
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you Lance.  The main double flying and landing wires are heavy EZ line.  The strut bracing wires are fine EZ line.

If you'd not explained the type's history I'd have sworn this was a "What If?" Felixstowe! Esoteric indeed! Very nicely done Tim.
