1:72 Roden Camel “Black Prince"
« on: March 22, 2024, 02:29:18 AM »
First off, this is not my model, it's the first kit completed by my son Curt since he was 11 or 12, back around 2001. He’s not much into social media, but I was so thrilled when he brought it down the other night I decided to post these pics, being the proud dad and all. He used mostly Tamiya acrylics, mixing the PC10 according to the WnW formula, and masked the roundels. The rigging is Uschi’s elastic material, and he used some PE in the cockpit, but otherwise he pretty much stuck with what the kit supplied:

All in all he’s pretty happy with it, although he says there are a lot of things he’d do differently if he were to start it over. But it was a tremendous learning experience and he’s already started his next build, the 1:72 Roden F.1. His brother is working on a couple of Great War subjects also, so I’m glad to see that our particular niche in the hobby is alive and well!

How nice to see this! And that Camel rigging looks tricky - well done Curt! Great weathering also.
Cheers,
Gary

That is a model to be proud of. The rigging and weathering are super, and the PC10 is a realistic shade, as is the CDL underside. Excellent model.

Stephen.

I’ll pass the comments along, in the meantime thanks, Gary, Laszlo, and Stephen. And Dave, I wish he was still 12, ‘cause that would make me 41! He’s actually 37 nowadays; his younger brother just turned 34 a couple of weeks ago… still trying to figure out where all that time went :o

You should be both proud - your son of the lovely model and you of the skilled son!

Dutch, your son Curt did an excellent job on the Camel!  I'm having a hard time believing that he's just getting back into the hobby... this guy's good!
Please pass on these complements and if he doesn't join this site himself, please keep posting pictures of his completed kits.

Take care

Wow, that's amazing for one so young! You and he should be very proud. I was still winding cotton thread around the struts of my WWI aircraft at that age. Mind you, it was 1968, so maybe I was pretty state of the art at the time..... ;D

Nice model, irrespective of builder's age, great rigging.
Hope he's still making them! (He's allowed a wee break for kids of his own off course)

I feel so much better knowing Curt's my age, not 12 - still, I want to be him when I grow up! What a beautiful build!

That is a very nice model from your son, hats off. But it’s also your merits as he follows in your footsteps.

Dutch, that is just magnificent!  I can only hope to build one like this. Excellent oil staining on the underside.
