AXIAL propeller logos... what diameter were they?
« on: December 04, 2023, 10:52:01 PM »
Hello again and season's greetings to all!  I'm working on another 1/144 scratchbuilding project and getting close to the end. This one is a Pfalz D.IIIa in the markings of Otto Kissenberth of Jasta 23.

While I'm adding all the final details, I was wondering if I had a shot at representing the circular Axial  prop logos that appear on each blade. I was unsure of the correct diameter of the design however, and hoped to ask around to see if anybody knows. A millimetre is like a mile at this scale, so it would be great to be able to get it right. Any insights will be very gratefully received!   :)

Cheers!

Hi William, not exactly what you asked for, but these prop logos on the WnW E.I (Early) sheet are roughly 2.5mm across, which seems to be about the average on their other sheets. Just for comparison, the actual Garuda decal on the NASM Albatros was 78mm across according to the color separations included in Mikesh's book.

Hope this helps, someone else may have a more precise answer.

PS - Fantastic work, BTW :)

Hi Davos, thank you! That is a really good place to start. 👍
I just realised I wrote Aviatic instead of “Xial” by mistake, so I edited the above (then realised it should be Axial… geeze!. I noticed Wingnut Wings used to sell actual-size logos on their website, but they don’t say what the diameter is.  Hopefully someone bought a set before they closed and can weigh in. 🤞

Hi William, the "Axial" actual size decal measures 4.5 inches (sorry, I do not have a metric measuring tape).  Hope this helps.  Beautiful 1/144 project

Hi Juan, that is brilliant. Thank you so much! That works out to 0.79mm in 1/144, which should be doable.  I drew up a slightly simplified version of the Axial logo in photoshop and did a test print on clear decal film.  It looks pretty promising. I'll tweak it a bit for clarity and see how it goes.  Very exciting!   ;D

Amazing, William. Do you use a scanning electron microscope instead of an Opti-Visor...?
