1/72 Revell Nieuport 17c (17bis)
« on: October 11, 2023, 09:44:51 AM »
1/72 Revell Nieuport 17 modified to represent a 17bis and marked as Charles Nungesser's aircraft.
I made the suggested corrections to the Revell fuselage as found on the old WWIMML site (increase fuselage depth at tail, exhaust channel up front, etc.) and laminated sheet styrene to the fuselage sides, sanded and filled to get the curved contour.  Stretched sprue was used to create the stringers.  A resin Clerget engine was used and wheels were replaced with Aeroclub.  I reduced the depth of the cowl, but not enough... I was worried about clearing the replacement engine.  Upper wing was replaced with the spare from the Eduard kit (filled the cutout with a piece of sheet styrene)  This kind of dates this build as the only Eduard Nieuport out at this time was the Flyboys version.
I now understand that Nungesser's 17bis had rounded ailerons as on the Nie. 24.  I'm going to say that this model represents his aircraft a day before the updated ailerons were installed...  Yeh, that's it!

That’s a really nice conversion!  Looks very clean and well proportioned.  Never would have guessed it wasn’t the Roden BIS kit.

Beautiful job, what a little gem! Who did the conversion on the WW1MML? I know Steve Perry did one on accurizing the Testor's N.17 (pre-Eduard, it may have been the ancient Hawk kit originally IIRC) but I'm not remembering this one. Good to see the notes are still giving good service, whoever was responsible.

Hello Dutch, Thank you much for the kind comments.
I have a hard copy of this article and it looks like it was created by Matt Bittner.  It covers correcting and converting the ESCI and/or Revell Nieuport 17 to an 11, 16, 21 and 23... also for updating to the Siemens Schuckert D.I.  Obviously an older article, he references Rosemont/Roseplanes upgrades throughout the text.

Very neat work in 'The gentleman's scale' (As Tim mentions I thought it was the Roden kit until I read the description)

Lovely work all round. I wouldn't have noticed the ailerons (especially in 1/72!) if you hadn't told me.......
