Hey guys(gals?),

Finally getting around to introducing myself after perhaps rudely making a few posts first. I have immersed myself in this site due to long term love of history in general,WWI in particular and the quality of members which seems to match my temperament. I became interested in much of this because my dad was a B-47 pilot who loved the Air Force my grandfather was a machine gunner who fought in new Guinea among other places (thought you Aussies and NZ'ers would find this of interset) and reading about military history since a grade schooler. I fit the demographic nicely being a 53 y.o. ex-modeler until restarting about ten years ago albeit on a limited basis. I was a USAF dentist for 3 years ('86-'89) and a practicing periodontist until recently. I am primarily interested in history and flight sims but can still bang out a decent"B" grade model without much effort a few times a year. I admitted in a previous post to being more of an assembler than a modeler because I don't have the patience necessary to sit at the modeling table as much as I should. This is probably due to the time spent modeling in peoples mouths over the years but this doesn't prevent me from loving this hobby and admiring the fantastic builds of the other members on this site. The quality of this  site and now having more free time will hopefully encourage more production on my part. I also like historical figures but only paint a few a year with the same "B" level results. I tend to buy more than I build but don't seem to have much buyers remorse because my willingness to support companies who create these modeling subjects for us but then again, don't we all overdo it bit! Thanks to everyone here for the overall expertise and encouragement of others with similar interests.

G'day, Ken. 

A big welcome, mate, from someone else who does figures as well.  I had two uncles and a great uncle who were in New Guinea, luckily they all came home.  Was your grandfather with the 41st DIV, as Uncle Alex mentioned working with them in NG (he was with a 6DIV transport company and they were using some of the 41st's trucks) in some of hi letters.

I'm sure you'll enjoy this board, it's one of the friendliest I've ever seen.

My grandfather was in the 32 inf. div. I have this softcover book  about the 32nd  Division that my mom gave after he died about 12 years ago. He had some interesting stories about having a Btrit revolver over there and not taking too many prisoners after a few infuriating incidents. The book just mentioned also has the names of about a dozen soldiers in the machine gun and mortar crews he took the time to write down. He was not hesitant to repeat of the brutality of the fighting and of  that against the natives by the enemy soldiers.

G'day, Ken.  The 32nd was involved in the fighting at Buna, one of the bloodiest campaigns in PNG, so I can imagine your grandfather saw a lot of brutality.  Taking the Japanese prisoner often wasn't an option, even when they were wounded, as they would often try to take one more Allied soldier with them, rather than be taken prisoner.  It became SOP to "double tap" any Japanese bodies when the Australians were moving through captured enemy positions.  No doubt the US troops did the same. 

On to more pleasant things- I look forward to seeing some of your models on the board.
