Part 5.

I’ve decided on a livery for my Eindecker’s. They will actually be Fokker E. I’s. This scheme is one sent to the Navy designated Fokker LF.70. It has an interesting cammo scheme.

It’s quite confusing to differentiate between the three Eindecker types . I, . II , and . III. This is a mid production Eindecker .I so had basically the same wing chord as the others. It is however devoid of the aft fuel tank (so no cap behind the pilot seat), no integral wing compass, and the metal foot bracing on the wings are different. I’ll add them after painting. The fuselage should be slightly shorter as well but won’t be too noticeable in this scale.

.

This color profile is from the Saber Kits 1/72 offering. The cammo callout looks to be wrong. Im thinking the fuselage should have the Gray-green behind the pilot, CDL line, then Mauve purple aft to the tail. Also the port tail looks to be Mauve and the starboard a lighter Gray-green. Saber also have the later 1916 Eisernes Kreuz instead of the curvier 1915 style.

.

Starting with masking the CDL demarcation line and then masking the mauve section. I sprayed Model Air Gray-green.

.

Next I masked the gray surface and painted the Mauve color (mix of Model Master Napoleonic Purple and burnt umber 3:1)

.

The turned metal cowling has a base coat of Tamiya Dark Metal

.

Then hand painted flat white squiggles

.

Then a light overspray of Testors Matt silver

.

.

This is where they stand today!

Coming along nicely Tim. I'd read about the black (or dark grey) and white technique for the engine tunrned effect, but this is the first model I've seen done that way and I may try it on my next one ;D

Lovely work Tim, and I agree that the turned effect on the cowling works very well, especially in the smaller scale.

Part 6.

Thank you all for your gracious comments.

More Eindecker masking madness! After all the final coloring was completed, I remasked the ribs to apply a light coat of Tamiya Clear Smoke. This adds a little more depth to the wing spar shadowing and highlights the ribs.

.

Next, I added detail to the undercarriage. The 1/48 kit had no wooden airfoil on the steel tubing. The 1/72 Eduard kit only had this on the vertical tubes. I thinned the tubing by shaving with an Exacto blade and then gluing on Contrail strut. I had to fill the small gaps with putty.

.

The perils of building schemes from the spares box ( and not rigorously checking references)is sometimes you don’t have what you need. In my case, both Eisernes Kreuz markings are incorrect. The 1/48 kit supplied ones are 1916 so I only had these smaller leftover from a Lloyd C.V build. The 1/72 kit I used Americal Gryphon decals that are the correct size but a little more curvy than the reference photo. I can live with both nevertheless.

.

Thanks for looking in!

Your Eindekkers are coming along beautifully Tim. Your method of painting the turned metal effect is brilliant. It looks so convincing and like all the best ideas is quite simple.

I am catching up after a long absence Tim. You have done some magnificent work on the Eindekkers since I last looked in - in fact it was very interesting to read your thread and catch up. I was unaware of the mauve/green camouflage on the Eindekkers - one learns something new every time one looks in on this forum! The turned metal effect on the cowlings is also a brilliant idea - one to be put away for future reference.

Stephen.

Amazing work, Tim, puts the Scourge in a whole new light for me. I always thought of them as being kind of drab...

This isn't intended as a brag or boast, but I never understood the appeal until I got to see a couple of examples (albeit reproductions) in person!

Part 7.

I have made some progress with the Eduard DH.2. It took quite a while to mask all the internal framework of the wings.

.

Next I lightly overspray the surface with Model Air (Aged White). Then removed the masking to reveal the framework.

.

I wanted to attempt the see through wing roundels. I have not done this on any previous builds.  Paying homage to the elderly Revell kit, I used leftover DH.2 decals from an 1981 issue. They worked great. I also constructed a reverse numeral 4. I only had black decal strips but figured it would be fine. The aircraft numerals are actually going to be red.

.

Next I lightly overspray in multiple layers to make the translucent appearance.
.

I think it turned out pretty well. Next time I’ll freehand the framing over the roundels before overspraying.
