CSM Nieuport 17 (Early 1:32 Scale)
« on: March 27, 2023, 01:19:18 PM »
Just a few photos of my latest Build. I did not maintain a Build Log on this one, my production has been "stalled" for a bit as real world chores in the Winter months have kept Bench time elusive at best!
I struggled with this little devil at times, it's a nice Kit and I suspect many of the challenges I encountered were self induced and those clumsy and shaky fingers I keep whining about are getting no better with time! I chose one of the kit schemes and other then a few "scratched" enhancements to the interior it's pretty much an OOB Build. Paints are all Tamiya Acrylics, self mixed and I'm very pleased with the results in that department. I apologize for the poor quality of the images, it looks like a new camera is becoming a requirement rather then an option!

The Clear panels on the upper wing fit beautifully however I installed, then removed and reinstalled them a full six times in searching for a suitable adhesive. I finally threw caution to the wind, used CA, and thankfully no fogging of the acetate panels occurred. This may prove helpful to future Builders.

The sole After Market addition was the top mounted Lewis Gun from Gas Patch, a beautiful item.

I applied very little weathering to the model this time around as the model's color scheme was very easy on the eyes and I didn't want to dirty it up too much and lose that effect.

As the prop was more or less monotone and the laminations more or less invisible in the reference photos I used (like most French samples it seems) I stayed with the kit version painted with acrylics and oils in lieu of my usual hand carved efforts.

In all an appealing subject and with a careful approach and a little patience a very nice Kit.

Cheers,
Lance

Lovely model, Lance, you've done this one full justice, I'd say. It is a nice but tricky kit, getting the fuselage panels all trued up properly, but I'd say your experienced fingers have cracked it.
I have this one in the stack but have fought shy because of the cellon panel and what glue to use. I thought maybe white PVA. Yours is great, what did you use?
Cheers
Sandy

Wonderful paint job and wonderful model overall. No traces of shaky fingers visible for me!

Very nicely done, Lance.  The prop looks especially good in that closeup. The subtle weathering is a nice touch as well.

It's a beautiful model Lance. There are no signs at all of struggles due to shaky fingers in the end result. I would be so happy if I could achieve such a high quality finish!

I agree with all of the above: well up to your usual very high standard and absolutely no evidence of shaky hands and fat fingers. The light weathering is just right for my eys too.

Stephen.

Thanks for your replies Guys, you are all so kind or perhaps my poor photography masks the "warts" better then I thought!
Sandy, I tried 5-6 different types of adhesives/glues ranging from Microscale Krystal Klear to several  white wood  glues to Gorilla Gllue clear and was more or less about to give up on the Cellon windows. I had assumed CA would fog them as it does styrene clear parts however in the end I used a medium CA followed by a bit of thin CA "wicked" into the joints in lieu of the shelf of doom or bin consignment and it worked perfectly with no damage. Who would have figured??
Cheers,
Lance

Nothing wrong with an OOB build, Lance!

Your Nieuport looks absolutely lovely to me and I really like your oil painted wood grain effect prop.

Very nice Lance!

I’m yet to build a CSM kit, but they do look Wingnutesque!

Dave, Prze, and Guy,
    Thank you for your comments!
Guy, My thoughts on the WNW topic. The detailing and quality of the components of this Kit are mighty close to or as good as we enjoyed with the WNW products, and that's a high standard we can appreciate. My only complaint (and it's an easy workaround frankly) is the relative absence of sufficient positive alignment and "mating" gadgets like locating pins etc. vs. "butt" joints in the engineering of the Kit and a few vague areas in the construction directions. With decent references and a bit of experience it's a very nice Kit!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Lance,

That’s helpful, I’m tempted by the RFC Nieuport and of course the Scout.. just that I’ve already spent a fortune amassing WNWs of late!

Looking beautiful, I wish I knew about CA suitability for clear panels when Ibuilt mine  ;D
Painting and finishing are remarkable.

Giuseppe,
In retrospect I could have saved myself several sessions of frustration by doing a simple test of CA on a scrap of the cellon material from the kit, lesson learned! Hopefully others will benefit from my experience.
Cheers,
Lance
