A very effective colourisation
« on: March 01, 2023, 08:03:40 PM »
(Credits to the WWI pilots FB page where I noticed this re-toned picture.)

I think this a really effective colourisation and worth repeating here.

We probably all know the original b&w picture of MvR's visit which, to me, has little impact but, as tinted here, I think it really comes to life and leaps out at you.

Many historians understandably dislike the process as it gives a false authority to colours chosen, but as long as you don't treat the shading as gospel (and, heaven forbid, quote as a reference source!), the positive benefits in realism and immediacy are fantastic.

Anyway, it really caught my eye and, like Peter Jackson's movie, gives modern eyes a view on these century old images.

Nice spot Sandy. (I agree that it adds a certain immediacy to the original) :)

I saw this image also on instagram.  Good stuff. Here are a couple others that caught my eye there:

That’s truely remarkable. I am always surprised how much more vivid a picture gets just by colors. These are the best examples.

Wow - these are remarkable works! Sometimes colourising can be truly hit or miss but I rather like these.
