1/48 Junkers W.34 by Mikro Mir
« on: January 22, 2023, 11:38:28 PM »
Continuing my non-WW1 wandering I have completed a Mikro Mir Junkers W.34.  This is a limit production kit so more effort is required on the builder's part to make a nice model.  It looks like a single engine Ju52 with the typical Junkers corrugated skin and was used as a transport and training aircraft throughout the war.  This depicts a pre-war Lufthansa airliner.  The large lettering is painted on.  The tail swastikas and the one logo is a decal.  The kit has more markings in it but the corrugated skin doesn't like them so I have left them off.  I swapped out the kit engine for a Vector resin BMW engine.
Less than 24 hours after completion, it was in its first competition in Spartanburg SC, where it won a top ten place in the non-automotive category.  This contest was primarily a model car contest and all non-automotive subjects were in a single category with the top ten models awarded.

Thanks for looking and comments are welcome.

Super model of a type which is not often seen. The painted markings are extremely well done given the corrugations on the surfaces.

Congratulations on a well deserved award in the show.

Stephen.

I'd have said it was award-worthy if you'd not said it had won - congratulations Ken, what a beauty!

A very fine model. Seemingly easy but we all know the pain of placing markings (be it decals or airbrushing) on Junkers corrugations. You have done a great job. And congratulations on the well deserved prize.

Thank you for the nice comments, gents.
This was an enjoyable build of an uncommon subject.  I would have liked to put all the markings on, but the corrugations were very deep and close together.  The decals would never have settled into them.  I made paint masks of the lettering by scanning the decal sheet and then made masks on the Silhouette cutter.  The masks were placed over the corrugated surfaces, then the gray color was sprayed to minimize overspray bleed-under in the corrugations before spraying the black color.  This process worked well.
I also picked up a 1/48 Hobby Boss Ta152 kit for $10.  There were a lot of vendors there.

Very nice results from what I'm sure was a challenging build.

Nice job on the Junkers, Ken. Unusual subject of which I hadn't heard of before.
Cheers,
Gary
