Sopwith Camel by Maly Modelarz in 1/33rd
« on: January 09, 2023, 07:14:26 AM »
All,

I am a sick, sick man.  I also noticed that my allies are sort of out numbered so here is a Camel!

I got his one from an estate sale and it's the first time I've built from this manufacturer.  The textures are very nice with subtle shading and clean lines.  You can make either Roy Brown's or Mellersh's.  To be different, and I like the roundels on the fuselage and the neat wood work, I'll be making the latter.  I also don't really like the red and black checkers on the stab so I'm going to modify that a bit.  So it will be my 209th Squadron Camel!

So far I've only got the tail parts cut out, the skeletons balsa-backed and I'll start gluing soon.

Thanks for looking,

Dan

Looking great Dan.  I agree that the printing and detail of this kit is exceptionally well done.  Should be a real looker when completed.

Thanks very much, Rick!

Got the main cockpit tub done.  I need to make my own seat belts as the ones in the kit look more WWII vintage.  I think I'll add a couple more bits in there but it all went together really well.  I'm pleased.  More fuselage soon!

All,

I finished the fuselage skeleton and then got the main fuselage skins on and it really looks like a Camel at this point.  I think machine guns next and try to finish the forward "hump" and then it'll be on to the wings!

Thanks for looking,
Dan

It is not only amazing how beautiful these paper models look, but also how quickly you bring them to fruition!

Looking really nice Dan. Are you reinforcing the fuselage with balsa?

Thanks Rick and Tim!

Rick...well...in most cases, I don't need to worry about painting and decaling and I take the easy way out on rigging so these things go a bit quicker indeed.  Your models are painstaking and works of art!

Tim:  Yes.  1/32nd balsa for the sides, formers etc.  These are traditionally made from cardboard you'd steal from a cereal box!  I have done that, but I work with balsa a bit better.  It's also more rigid in my hands so I get straighter wings, tails etc.

This one is almost falling together and will be done rather soon, I reckon.

Thanks for looking, folks.

Got some more done including the engine.  The cowling is just sitting unfinished to see how things line up.  It'll look pretty nice once filled and sanded!

Thanks for looking...Dan

Hi Dan,

looking very good!

Balsa and paper are a great team, combining the strengh of balsa and the surface of paper.

But I never dared to cut as close to the edge as you did in the Avro vid!

Dan. This is looking fantastic!  That engine looks like an injection molding.   A pleasure to see what can be done with these paper kits.

Dan, I have been following this build on YouTube. Your videos are a great resource to the modeling community.  Thanks for shooting and sharing them.
