Nieuport 17 Side Panels
« on: December 23, 2022, 12:36:30 AM »
Forumites,
I wasn't sure whether to post this here, or in the "Markings and Camouflage" section. If it's in the wrong place, admins please move it.

Anyway, the removable side panels on Nie.17's:  I assume they're made of aluminum, but yet, at least to my eye, they appear to be the same tone/color/etc. as the rest of the doped fuselage. Were they painted with aluminum dope and not left in their natural state as the cowlings were?

Thanks!

Warren

Nieuport 17-23 panels were made of plywood stripes with a coat of fabric on top of it

Thanks Edgar, I wasn't sure. I know the sides of the cockpit were made of strips, but this goes for the two removavle access panels on the front as well? That's what I'm asking for specifically.

Windsock Nieuport Fighters Vol. 1 has color pics of Belgian Nie. 23 N5024 interior which show the “ovoid” fuselage access panels in the same finish/material as the parent panels composed of diagonal wood strips. Appears to me that Edgar is correct.
