Boelcke's D-II From EcardModels in 1/33rd Scale
« on: November 06, 2022, 01:06:20 PM »
All,
I couldn't help but start this after just finishing reading Boelcke's letters/diary.  I always liked the D-I and II and as I have a paper D-III and D-V as well as a Roden D-I I back-dated to the prototype, a D-II seems appropriate.  So far I've gotten little things done like the seat, the main fuselage section skins, the tail skid and the control surfaces with fin and stab.  This will be a really neat one when completed.

Cheers and keep your scissors sharp...Dan

Hello Dan,
Now that November is upon us, you are sure to amaze us with some more paper magic.

Evening, All!

I got some more done.  She is armed (almost done) and I've started with the engine.  More to go but it looks pretty nice.  I may modify the nose shape a bit if the spinner looks odd, but we'll see.  It will look nice with the exhaust etc. that still needs installing.  Pretty darn cool.

Cheers,
Dan

Success has made you lose your humility!  ;) Looking great, Dan! My Avro parts continue to stare at me from beside the bench but I predict 2023 will be its yea...

You'll get 'er done, Zac.  I just watched a Kermit Weeks video of flying the Albatros D-II and thought what a beautiful place you live in.  Wow.  You are lucky.

Anyway, on this Thanksgiving day in the US, I got a bit more done on the ol' D-II.  Basically, engine intakes and exhausts and started the spinner.  It will need lots of work.  The petal design to obtain the curve worked out great...the best I've ever made!  However...I think the shape is a bit off so it will still need filling out, sanding etc. to look good anyway.

I think I'll play with that tonight and then start the wings tomorrow.  I'd better hurry as I'm supposed to be making a paper submarine as a Christmas gift so I'd better get cracking!

Cheers to all,
Dan

Couldn't stop so I worked on the lower wings.  All the ribs and spar went in great.  Not attached yet but you can see it starting to look better.

Cool beans...Dan

Excellent progress Dan!

And yes - sometimes I have to remind myself how lucky we are here. You have to come down some time!

Hi Zac...that would definitely be a trip.  Seeing your country and that amazing collection!  Maybe some day.

Until then, I got my bottom wings on, made my interplanes and attached the top wing too!  Now I'll work on the cabanes.  All seems straight and true although I do see a tad on anhedral in the lower wings but it isn't too noticeable.  Perhaps my interplanes should have been shortened a tad.

I'll still take it as a win.  Sweet...Dan

Thanks, Zac.  This one is rather easier than the Avro at least with fewer struttery to worry about!

For the last part of the long Thanksgiving weekend here in the US, I got the cabanes on.  Really makes it stronger.  More little details around the cockpit, guns and the rad and next will be rigging for some relaxation!

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks Tim and Allan!

Allan:  I made Boston Cream Pie for Thanksgiving.  It didn't last long... ::)

By the way...I'm looking to do some more plastic soon.  Just having such a blast with these paper models at the mo'.

Hope you and Su had a great Thanksgiving,

Dan

P.S.  I'm re-reading some books you gave me several years ago, Allan.  "Sagittarius Rising", "Warbirds" etc. and am enjoying them all over again.  Even read "The Blue Max" for the first time after seeing your D-VII.  You are such an enabler.  So thank you!
