The 35mm cannon was considered a failure, so why didnt anyone ever think of putting a semi auto 20mm cannon in it instead?

Did France (or the Allies) possess a 20mm at the time? I've found reference to a German design used on Grossflugzeuge but not any Western ones. Mind you that's from a quick pass over Wikipedia: I defer to the experts on this!
