Info on the Avro 511 Arrowscout?
« on: June 14, 2022, 02:24:29 AM »
Does anyone have or know of reference sources for the Avro 511 'Arrowscout' besides the 3 or 4 pictures that always come up on web searches?  These pictures seem to come from the 2 books 'British Aircraft 1808 - 1914', and 'Avro Aircraft since 1908'.
Any pictures of the cockpit?

There are a couple of photo's in the Putnam 'Avro aircraft since 1908 as well. Apparently it was displayed at the 1914 Olympia Aero Show.

(A simple Google search for Avro 511 brings up various plans and photos)

Thanks, PJ and Paul.  I have most of the scans, but I didn't have the written description which adds quite a lot of information.
I also have the two reference books mentioned in the OP.

I already have a couple of Gnome engines built and this project may be my next scratchbuild.

I started browsing through Flight Magazine for this particular aircraft, but I haven't come across it (yet).

Do it!  Also, a link to a little blurb on it from Scientific American: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Scientific_American/Maw4AQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%221914%22+%22olympia%22+aero-show&pg=PA265&printsec=frontcover

And here's a clear overhead c/o the Getty Archives:

Wow, thanks again PJ.  This clear picture shows more details of the construction.  I also see a 504 like I built behind the 511.

P.S. Stumbled across these yesterday, in case they may still be of interest.

Here's a slightly sharper version of the above image, as featured in the Schiffer Aviation History book "British Aircraft Before The Great War".

None of the books I checked featured cockpit images.
