my next kit..

with the end of my junkers build just about in sight i'm looking for advice  :)

i have two kits in my mini stash both wnw - Pfalz D.IIIa and the Sopwith Pup RNAS

the question is which would be the "easier" build for me as a novice, in particular as regards to

the rigging as i have never rigged using turn buckles etc...

Well, build the Pup and I will try to build mine along with you. There are small traps to watch for from what Ive seen but nothing more than the Junkers - and rigging.

Both are relatively straightforward builds to be fair. I'd suggest they are of equal complexity for rigging.

The cockpit floor of the Pup needs a little thinning for the perfect fit and the underside of the wing to fuselage join on the Pfalz needs careful attention.

My advice would be to flip a coin.  :)

Also you don't have to model turnbuckles.  Rigging can be glued directly into the wings etc or threaded through loops (from Bob's Buckles or make your own).  The turnbuckles can also be simulated by a drop of paint to thicken the rigging in appropriate places.

However, if you choose to model the turnbuckles, these models both don't have too much rigging, especially compared to the Fe2B, DH2 etc..

Although they are generally comparable, the Pup does have a tad more rigging with the tail, cabane rigging and double flying wires, but nothing too complicated.

I'd go with Gary's advice concerning the coin toss. Either kit would be a great project.

pfalz is easier, no double lines. the pup has a double line penetrating the lower wing to the landing gear. the pfalz would be simpler.

I have a build log of the Pup on my website if you are interested, you may pick up a few pointers to help you along the way. Apart from the bottom wing fit issue it is quite an easy straight forward build, the big gap between the wings makes rigging a lot easier.

Having done both, the pfalz is an easier rig and a better fit than the pup.

The cockpit of the pup needs rigging and the cockpit is a tricky fit.
The pfalz is a firmer more definite tight fit throughout and no tricky box seam under the fuselage.
