Billy Bishop Nieuport XXIII
« on: March 29, 2022, 11:01:37 AM »
I know Bishop flew a Nieuport XVII, and also a type XXIII.  My question is when did Bishop start flying the XXIII and in which type (and aircraft) he scored the most victories?

I took a quick look at his victory lists in Above the Trenches, and also in Peter Kilduff's biography of Bishop. In ATT, they show serial numbers, but don't differentiate by type. Kilduff does include the type. According to both, his first victory was 25 Mar 17 in Nieuport XVII A.306. For victories 2-7,  31 Mar to 8 Apr, he flew Nieuport XXIII A.6769, and for numbers 8-36, 20 Apr to 20 Jul,  flew Nieuport XXIII B'1566. All the rest were scored on SE.5's and SE5a's, beginning 28 Jul 17.

In the past, there has been confusion in some references over which were 17's and which 23's. The last 23, B'1566, is one of the markings in the Copper State RFC Nieuport XXIII kit.

There’s a replica of his N.17 hanging at Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ) in Toronto:
