Removing residue gum
« on: December 29, 2021, 08:29:15 PM »
Hi - does anyone have a trick for removing stubborn gum residue caused by hobby masking tape ? I used a generic masking tape for my Roland ‘windows’ (tamiya has kind of disappeared at the moment) and once I finally removed the masking the windows are really ‘gummed’ up and warm water is not working on removing this residue.. any help appreciated! cheers Matt

WD40 should do the trick.
Just make sure you degrease afterward  ::) :o

Lighter fluid carefully applied with a Q-tip / cotton bud.

Lighter fluid is also commonly called naptha and is generally quite gentle on painted finishes but test first. You are likely to find that anything that will remove the gum residue may also be not so kind to your painted finish.

I have been using 3m Scotch delicate surface painter's tape in lieu of Tamiya masking tape

I get mine from Amazon.

I don't remember where you are located but in the US I use a product called Goo Gone. Works quickly. Like Graham said though, be careful as it will most likely do some damage to any surrounding paint work!

Thanks all! I’ll give these options a whirl - but a beautiful day here in Canberra and heading off for a bushwalk (i.e hike, tramp etc for our global community) so it will have to wait to later! Cheers Matt
