Airfix R.E. 8, 1/72, with some corrections....
« on: January 02, 2013, 06:26:38 PM »
This was my entry in the old kits group build, and as you can see I missed the dead-line badly. I had some other projects with entry dead-lines in November and December, but now I have taken this wee beastie up again, and have gotten in some good work over the holidays.

Our Harry is beginning to look something like an aeroplane at last....

The first pictures show the thing before the final primer coat, with wings, scratch-built tail surfaces, and surface detail on the fuselage. The vertical fin is non-standard, but accurate for the subject of the model --- an R.E. 8 at a training establishment in Egypt. Though not pictured, the rudder has been made.

At this point I discovered I had mis-measured, and attached the wings two millimeters too far aft. So I took them off and re-attached them; the next pictures show the thing with the wings in proper position, and under the final coat of Tamiya Fine White primer.

Once in this state I proceeded to basic painting, after a bit of further detailing. The fasteners indication I had put in with a needle point did not come up well, and so I went ahead and added them 'armor style' with bits of .25mm rod.

The vertical fin has been left unpainted as yet, because there may be a tricky bit of marking needing to be put in, and while I have not decided for sure how I would handle it, I expect a blank white surface will be of help.

The air scoop is simply resting there, it is not yet attached. I am going to have to do a little work on it still; the fit and profile are not yet quite right.

Next steps will be to complete interior and exterior fuselage detailing, and decals.

So glad to see you back on this little beauty, OM.  She's brilliant.  Any chance you can provide us with a link to the earlier bits of the project?
Cheers,
Bud

Should be getting back to this this weekend, Sir, but it may be some time before more pictures can come up. Some decals need printing, which will need much assistance from the wife, and once they are printed out, I like to leave them dry for several days before applying the fixative, a schedule derived from bitter experience....

OM, she's looking sweet, mate.  I sympathise with comment about letting the decals dry before coating them, too.  I wait at least three days, now.

Cheers.

Dal.

Well behind schedule, Gentlemen, but here is the present state of play....

I do not know what the odd marking on the fin is; enlarging the photograph of the machine, it appears to be lettering in a foreign alphabet, possibly Greek or Arabic. It seems so fitted to the shape of the fin that I do not think it was repeated on the other side. I did my best to duplicate it in pencil on a template taken from the fin piece, and wife converted it into white on red-brown, printed on white Testor's decal film. Once applied, I painted over the color portion of the film.

The interplane struts are scratched, from 2mm x 0.75mm strip. The kit pieces are 28mm long; the drawing indicates 23mm is the proper length.

The upper wing is a hair off-center to port at this point, and the weight of the piece exaggerates its dihedral. I intend to correct both things with attachment of the cabane struts (there is a good deal of flex in the thing at this point).

Here is a picture of the next batch of decals wife has laid out and printed out on white film....

Those at the top are for a Nieuport Scout that is pretty much complete except for its rudder, the others are for the R.E. 8 C5108. I expect they will be dry enough to spray sealer on this weekend.

You are moving along quite nicely OM, great work on the scratch built struts, are you also scratch building the cabanes. Congrats to your wife for the excellent job on the decals.
