Spad XI - 1/72 Planet Models resin kit
« on: October 25, 2021, 10:33:04 PM »

Here's my attempt at a 1/72nd scale Spad XI.  This is the Planet Models resin kit.  It was a challenge for me as this particular kit had problems out of the box.  Also, I tried using all Vallejo products and Strutz brass struts.  This kit sat half built on my shelf of doom for a good 10 years as the wings were terribly warped, bent, and twisted.  I had made several attempts to straighten them, but never got them to flatten entirely.  I decided to just finish the darn thing, come what may.  I had the brilliant idea of cutting holes all the way through the wings for the Strutz, and use them to glue the wings straight.  This failed miserably as the super glue was not strong enough to hold the stressed resin wing to the brass struts.  I know, I know, you can't force things on models.  I don't know why I tried.  So, leaving the wings as they were, lots of filling and sanding ensued.  I decided this would be my test bed for hand brushing VMC.  After the second strip and repaint, I decided to live with the results.  The rigging was done with lycra thread.  It took four tries to get it to look right between finding the right size of thread and a couple attempts trying to fabricate some semblance of flying wire spacers.  I never did get the spacers to look decent, so those were omitted.  When I went to put on the decals, I realized over the years I seem to have lost the unit markings.  Fortunately, I have a second kit that someday will be made into a Spad XVI, so I could steal the unit markings from it.  While I was grabbing the decals, I took a peek at the kit itself, and of course, the wings are perfectly flat and straight.  My first reaction was I built the wrong kit first, my second reaction was thank the modeling gods this one isn't a mess like the first.  When this build stops showing up in my nightmares, I may consider starting the XVI project.

I'm not entirely happy with the results but I am happy it's done.  I know I'm a bit better modeler from the mistakes I made and the lessons learned.

Hey Stuart - a two-seater SPAD - WOW!
Sounds like a helluva struggle to get the plane to emerge out of the bits, but the results are excellent - and you've got an XI in your display, which is more than the rest of us can say!
Very attractive colourful model which you have created despite the best efforts of the baleful modelling Gods. Warped resin is a pig but you've triumphed.
Congratulations
Sandy

Hi Stuart,

I'd just like to echo Sandy's comments and say that you've done a cracking job on this SPAD! Yes, its a bit of a shame about the wings, but the overall finish, the rigging and the camouflage all contribute to an excellent result.

Cheers,
Mark

I'd be entirely happy with that, it looks terrific! Unusual subject too, I didn't even know there was a 2 seater Spad.

Definitely looks good, Stuart, well done!

If only we could get new-tool two-seater SPADs. Both this and the Rosemont SPAD XI have shape issues, let alone the XVI. Instead we'll get another 109, Mustang, or what have you. Sigh...

Despite the defects, you have a SPAD I haven't seen modeled before.  Thanks for showing it here.

Thank you all for the kind comments.

Charlie, never!  I have a hard time throwing out a model no matter how much I've bottled it.

Matt, I referenced and took continued inspiration from yours on Internet Modeler.

That looks really good from where I am sitting. It reads as though you had a real battle with this one but you won in the end.

When you wrote this you were writing for most of us... the perfect model will only ever be in our imaginations. If we stop learning we will never be better modellers.

A two seater SPAD :o  Looks like a SPAD to me, and that form a warped kit.
Normally the resin is going back to the original shape, if you put hot water over it (or other heat). There is mentioned in the extended manual for the Small Stuff resin engines that you can bend the resin push rods with a heat of a 60W lamp without touching them - they go back to the original straight push rod.
As I wrote in Rick's thread - we have the SPAD weeks ;)

the perfect model will only ever be in our imaginations. If we stop learning we will never be better modellers.
I can only sign what Stephen said!
Fredrik was going even further and said, that the perfect model failed once you open the kit box and start to work on it. There is some truth behind.

Cheers,
Frank

Very impressive sir!  I think you did a great job.

I've had a fascination with this a/c since I was a kid.
