Special Hobby Phonix D.1
« on: June 10, 2021, 06:48:39 PM »
Some models appeal because of the subject and others because of an interesting colour scheme so it's a bonus when you get both in the same project. I'm working on the 1/48 Special Hobby Phonix D.1 which is proving a rewarding build.

The Phonix colour scheme was a brown stipple applied over its base colour. Others have recreated this by using tiny sponges but I'm using a brush to dab the stipple on over a base coat of Citadel Paints Tausept Ochre.

I am using Vallejo Burnt Umber for the brown stipple coat while the metal panel undercoat around the engine is Tamiya aluminium.

There's still quite some way to go on this project but it's enjoyable tackling new challenges.

Previous Phonix builds from Forum members are invaluable references here and confirm how useful our "search" function can be!

Beautiful results so far, Dave, I built the same kit years ago and for sure it's among the references you quoted above.

Looking forward to getting more info and pics!

Greetings Antonio

Your superb Phonix build is one of my main references for this project and your guide has been invaluable to me in how I approach each stage of the build.

Thank you so much for sharing your work with the Forum and it shows how invaluable these posts can be to everyone.

Hello, Dave -

I've built this one myself recently so will follow with interest.

You've made some amazing progress already and your results look good.  Now you've close up the fuselage you should the rest of the kit goes together really well.

Regards

Dave

Great subject Dave and very nice stippling. I'll watch this with interest.

I'm often tempted to go back to 1/48 principally for the choice of Austro-Hungarian subjects. Mind you I stupidly sold off a great stack of Bob Norgren's superb Sierra Scale Model 1/48 A-H vacforms which I doubt I would ever be able to find again! I finished a few including a Phonix - but a D.II, not a D.I.
You are tempting me back though....
Sandy

That stippled effect is a perfect match for the box art picture. Funky looking subject, I really like it. Yet another WW1 flying machine I had never heard of. I'm learning as much about aviation as I am about modelling from this great forum!

Dave, you are doing a nice build of this lovely kit!

I have build the kit of the Phönix D.I K.u.K. Kriegsmarine long time ago, but just realized, that there was no thread in the "Show us your .." section, so I just started one. You should add your build there, once it is finished.

Cheers,
Frank

Update on the Special Hobby Phonix build. We are now in the rigging phase after painting was completed.

This is a very pleasing kit and one that has been a fun build. The model was brush painted using the stippling method shown in a previous post.

Here's where we are today:

Thanks for the support and encouragement folks. Its really appreciated.
