Wingnut Wings Sopwith Pup in progress
« on: December 19, 2012, 06:01:33 AM »
Hi all,

Here are some pictures of the Wingnut Wings Sopwith pup i'm working on.) It's a fun project, but dragging on a bit too long now.. not enough time to do modelling i'm afraid.
I'm approaching the moment were I can start rigging.

Scratch built seat after I accidently stepped on the one that came with the kit.

Cockpit before closing up the fuselage

Basic paint coat. All done with acrylics. (Gunze)

Worn paint, revealing the fabric underneat. A bit of artistic license, since I didn't find any pictures of a pup with such weathering.
The upper wing is dry fitted here.

Pilot that will be placed next to the pup, once it's ready

All the best

Flip

Wow, Flip!  What a brilliant introduction!  Outstanding work on the cockpit, cockpit coaming, fuselage painting and the figure.  Every aspect of this model is superb.  Funny how when you commit a model to this forum, things move along more quickly.  I look forward to seeing her fully rigged.
Cheers,
Bud

What a magnificent introduction to the forum, you have done a superb job on the Pup so far with brilliant weathering and detailing, the pilot figure is excellent.
Could you please let us know what paint and colour you used to do the padding around the cockpit coaming, it is a perfect leather colour.

Ditto, also how you made the seat cushion edges look worn as well - excellent work so far!

Flip:

I echo the preceding high praise---absolutely beautiful work.  You have mastered finish techniques that create a truly outstanding model.  I'm looking forward to learning much from you.  Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comments guys  :)

For the leather I have used a mixture of acrylics and oil paints
The  base color is a mixture of Vallejo 822 (German Camo black) + a little bit of  Vallejo light skin color.
for the lighter upper part I've used the base mixture + a little bit of Life Color light stock wood and Vallejo light orange and I have applied the paint in very thin washes working for the inside towards the outside of the coaming.
to paint the shadows (here the lower part of the coaming) I use very thin filters of Vallejo 822 + little bit of Vallejo black, progressively making it darker towards the lowest part.
Afterwards I've applied some thin filters of Burnt sienna oil paint.
It's a fairly easy technique, but it takes some time to do. Try it, you'll like it :-)

The seat cushion was done in the same fashion.

All the best

Thanks very much Flip for your painting tip, that is a very interesting technique you use and will be well worth trying.

Here's a picture of the underside of the Pup. You won't see a lot of it,  once it's on it's wheels, but it's the idea that counts hé :-)
weathering was done with oil paints.
