Has anyone tried this. Also can it be converted  to a civilian aircraft?

Well you will have your work cut out for you , width of the fuselage will need to changed , the cowl , upper decking . strut positions , cockpit layout .

Quick fix would be to change the cowl and upper decking along with the prop . Rest I don't think will make much of a difference when view by others . But yes it can be done depending on ones how far one wants to go .

You mean the Sowith Schneider as flown in Monaco?
I converted on from a special Hobby kit in 1/48, with new wooden floats, engine, cowling, changed fuselage, masks instead of decals, ....

So I guess this could be done: Just scratch all parts, which do not fit ;)
May be you should start with the Windsock Datafiles and compare the drawings for differences between Sopwith Schneider (Tabloid) and Baby, so you will get a feeling, what can be used from the kit.

Good luck,
