Royal Aircraft Factory FE8, 1:72 Scaleplanes vacform
« on: December 22, 2020, 09:54:45 PM »
At the beginning of the lockdown there was talk of a "lockdown group build" on the Vacform modellers facebook page so I decided to jump in. I dug out one of the first kits I acquired when I restarted the hobby back in 2011, The RAF FE8. I knew from the start it would be a challenge: my first "pusher", only my 3rd vacform, and it wasn't very accurate!

I had a Small Stuff engine for it, a PE seat, and an Aeroclub prop and wheels which could be modified, so I went for it!

The subject is 7624 of 40 Squadron, RFC, based at Treizennes, France.

On November 9th 1916 this aircraft, piloted by Cpt T Mapplebeck, was damaged by Anti-Aircraft fire and forced to land behind German lines. Capt Mapplebeck was made a POW.

There is a full build log here.

Paints are Misterkit and it's rigged with .06mm monofilament fishing line. I hope you like her!

Merry Christmas to all Forumites, and here's to a much better 2021!

Stay safe!

Ian

That is simply a beautiful model Ian!  It captures very well the look of the FE8.  I really like your colors, and that maze of rigging is--amazing! :)  Very well done, and worth the wait!

Best regards,

Bob

Now I know where the term 'stringbag' comes from.  Brilliant work.

That's just an amazingly impressive Model Ian, particularly so given the Kit's limitations and small scale. It was a pleasure to follow your progress on this one, the number of setbacks and challenges would have discouraged the most patient of Builders.  Great finish and detailing and the rigging is outstanding, a beautiful addition to your cabinet!
Cheers,
Lance

As always I really enjoyed following your build. Watching your processes in correcting kit flaws and overcoming obstacles was enlightening to say the least! Beautiful results in all Aspects!

Excellent result from some pretty unpromising materials Ian. Frankly I think that it would have been easier to scratch build it!

Wow, that is an impressive piece of art in that small scale!
The rigging is great, and I'm surprised about the labeled tires :o

Cheers,
Frank

Many thanks everyone for the positive feedback. It really does mean a lot to receive such positive comments from others who have also succumbed to the "bete noir" of modelling (ie biplanes!) and have themselves solved many of the "dark secrets" of the hobby.
Thanks again, and Merry Christmas to all!

Ian
