I am sure many of you know I am doing the Roden DR1 as Steinhausers early Jasta 11 bird. As far as I know only one photo of this aircraft exists. It shows a red band with yellow X, and eyes ala Voss DR1 on the cowling. , That is all that can be made out as far as personal markings. SO, I am looking for "OPINIONS" as to the Horizontal tail markings. We have a couple of photos showing his "Later" DR1 with yellow band with red X and yellow tail with red stripes. There is also one photo of his DVII with the latter markings. So here are the options as I see them.
1. NO overpainting of the tail at all
2. Red base and yellow stripes to match the band
3. Yellow base and red stripes like his later DR1.
Ray Rimelll has opted for #3. I will give My thoughts here realizing NO ONe can be "Correct".
I have decided against Option #1. Too much evidence from the later machines point to tail overpainting. I am of the opinion that the base was red on the band and the tail would match but.... Could he have reversed the coors so No Confusion with a certain Red Tailed bird of his Famous Commander? Again, No right or wrong, just want other opinions!
