Eduard Decals for Meng 1/32nd DR1
« on: December 05, 2020, 03:08:36 AM »
This was posted on FB several Days ago and sparked a bit of Controversy about the LvR scheme. That being said it is good to see Eduard producing Decals for other kits. Personally I would have preferred some other schemes but any decals are better than None!

huh yes wow this is a surprise. I assume the controversy was around not having a dark yellow or brown field behind the fuselage crosses on LvR?

Actually it was about if the upper wing was overpainted and was there yellow in front of the green cross fields

Ahh - gotcha - yeah it definitely is difficult to discern any overpainting of the top wing in the super high quality pics of the LvR crash on the WNW site - looks just like standard streaky green on there....

Thanks for posting. Will be interesting to compare Aviattic’s offering.

It seems to me that with a variety of crosses, a few sets of stencils, a stack of work/serial numbers, and some black & white ink a good decal manufacturer could produce a sheet with about 24 options. A color pdf download could be offered with an asterisk after every option's description with a corresponding note at the bottom of the page that says "You were planning on painting everything else anyway, right?" ;)

BTW, Dave Klaus still has a few of his 1/32nd Cutting Edge brand "Fokker Dr.1, Part 2" sheets available at his 'Fine Art Of Decals" webstore (about 1/3rd down the page). The options are Klimke, LvR, and von Tutschek:

How desperately disappointing another sheet for Manfred von and Aviatic have already done one, Cannot anyone think of anything else I mean other pilots flew this copy plane. Maybe I do a Phantom( sorry for swearing ).
When Meng announced they were releasing a new Fokker DR 1 I did wonder how it would pan out as all manufactures one with red markings, Glad I only bought 1  so I have loads of time to do all my Albatros kits with lots of different markings

Yep, Most of the schemes just require a bit of colorful paint and the serial number. That being said I  wouldn't turn down purchasing decals that included the stripes for birds like DR1 502/17... even though I can paint them  ::) Richards unique approach at Aviattic is at least offering something other than paint it red and add a serial number  8) JMHO,

These decals look nice.

Part of the fun of WWI modeling IMO is that no one really knows how these things looked, at least a lot of the time.

I thought WNW always did a fair and objective job of providing B/W reference material, pointing out the various theories, and settling the issue with a question mark for the modeler to decide.

"This plane may have been entirely blue with a black stripe, then again, it may have been black with a yellow stripe, or...."

I just saw a post on FB that says Eduard plans several more DR1 sheets. Hopefully they will choose some great schemes. Very promising!

I could certainly go for a Hasso Von Wedel option with the red richtrad marking and serial numbers. I'll paint the Jasta 4 b & w stripes. Among others, I'd love to see a 1/32nd option for Paul Baumer's earlier Dr.1 with the red/white/black stripes.

Wasn't Pheon at some point going to do new DrI sheets? I have the one they did several years back and it is great - even a reprint of that I would think might sell with all the Meng DrIs out there (at least I think the sheet would still work though it was done for the Roden)

Yes Pheon was supposed to do a comprehensive set for Jasta 6 and 11 plus others. I Hope they still do! That being said this was posted today on the WNW Fan Page. Further Eduard decals:

Okay, now we're talkin'! Some good variety on this second sheet. Of course, I already have 1/48's in the stash for Frommherz and Klimke so I'll have to check my 1/48th decals and see whether I should plan on bumping those two up to 1/32nd.

Actually there are Two sheets shown. Funny thing is I am working /Planning the Jasta 6 version of the Udet bird and the red band with yellow X on My current builds. Oh well they will look better painted on anyway  :o
