French five color camouflage question
« on: August 17, 2020, 11:41:57 AM »
After reading Xan's post about French five color camouflage, the question popped into my mind as to whether or not the colors had a sharp edge, as when brushed on, or were sprayed on giving a soft edge?  Thanks for your replies.

Good morning Wayne, it's best to check photo's of the 'plane you are building. A lot of a/c had a very fine soft edge, which in our scales would equate to an almost hard demarcation. Some had a hard line. Regards, Pete in RI

Thanks, Pete.  I'm building 1/32nd scale.  I'll try to find some good pics of Nieuports and SPADs.

If you don't have a collection of books at home, your local library can order them for you for free. just give them a title and author or ISBN number. Also check out the Memorial Flight website. Regards, Pete in RI

Just My opinion but I have Not seen a SPAD with soft camo. Some early Nieuports yes. JMHO,

The SPAD XIII in the Musee de l'air in France shows a hard edge definition of the colors.  Every picture I've ever seen of a SPAD shows this.  I seem to recall a film of workers at the factory doping the wings by hand of course.  Maybe old age playing a trick on my memory.

I'm in total agreement with my Amigo on this.
