1/72 Sopwith Triplane
« on: July 02, 2020, 11:57:23 AM »
For those interested I saw on another website that KP is set to release 4 boxings of the Sopwith Triplane in 1/72 scale. I saw pictures of box art and schemes but didn't see any sprue shots. No affiliation just passing information along.

Thanks,
Mike

Fantastic news! The old Revell triplane from 1966 needed a lot of work to get it up to snuff...! Ask me how I know...

My guess is that you will have to buy a brace of these. Then you can build one with double guns and another one unarmed.  ;)

Anyway, I am very happy to hear this news. This kit may turn to be one of my last 72nd scale builds. I have a fine collection of Sopwiths in this scale but Tripehound is evidently missing there. Some time ago I was not bold enough to follow Brad's steps and gave up the idea of correcting the old Revell kit.

Ultimate respect to you who can rig...or double rig....  these tiny little buggers.
There are only two states to be in:  Queensland and blotto.

Got to have a bash at one of these. A visit to the opticians is probably in order first. Rigging the 1/32 WNW kit was awkward enough.

There is not too much rigging on the Tripehound. And just two flights of double lines😁

For those that build these kits in 1/72 scale, do you rig them?!

And if so, how?!  I can't imagine whatever you would use would be in scale or particularly easy to install!

When I was a kid I was into the computer game "Red Baron."  It introduced me to WWI aviation, and inspired me to build a ton of WWI aircraft, all in 1/72 scale.  I had quite a collection at one time.

I certainly didn't rig them, though, and I was even painting them by hand with a paintbrush.

😳

I have shown some of my techniques to rig 72nd scale in Rigging for everyone section.

Lots of ways to rig in 1/72.
I cut pieces of painted heat stretched sprue as close to size as I could and CAed the ends at the strut/wing fitting or in to a hole drilled into the fuselage. A piece of wire with a bamboo handle heated in a candle flame and then passed not too closely under the loose line gets it to shrink and taughten up.

Prolific 1/72 scale modeler Dennis Ugliano drilled holes in this strut ends and then ran thin monofilament through as many as possible on a run. He pulled taught and added a drop of CA at each one. This worked well on multi bay biplanes.

Others drilled all the way through the wings pull the line tight and then fill and touch up the hole that shows.

All work well and all have their uses depending on the subject being modeled. I found the double parallel flying wires on British planes the biggest challenge.
