Sopwith Pup Gnome, 61 HD Sqn - A1 (1/32, Wingnut Wings)
« on: April 07, 2020, 07:53:16 AM »
For me it is the last missing kit of the Sopwith aircraft family available in the WNW line (two Camels, Tripe, Snipe and Dolphin plus the Lukgraph resin Baby are already here). I have used the recent Gnome release to fill this gap. I plan to build the kit option D - A1 from 61 HD Sqn - one armed with Vickers gun but seemingly not so popular as the Baby Mine or Bobs. Yet, not fully standard in the colours - because of the grey front, cockpit turtledeck and possible the tailfin.

The Sopwith aircraft interior is as usually pretty much packed with rigging and control lines. I have also added the Gaspatch turnbuckles, but only on those lines where the anchor points fitted with them will be visible through the cockpit opening. The photos in the instruction book also show the throttle lever on the left truss side just under the pulsator - omitted in the kit - luckily I had a spare PE part from the recently completed Baby - it is already bent and airbrushed. Also the throttle linkage and the pipes to the pulsator and to a device (I have no idea what it is on the right side of the truss - there is a glass pipe with some lines running to it) will be added soon.
The interior bits are now painted and the assembly has just begun.

Well, that was fast.  Most of the cockpit is done!
It's up to your usual standards, Przemol.

I believe the glass tube on the right side of the cockpit is a fuel gauge.

I hope to be joining the Pup Club real soon!
Seeing another build in the mix may just speed things along.

Lovely work, Prze!  ;)

Good show! Now if I slow down my build I can probably borrow ideas from both you and Andreas' builds... 😊

What a brilliant start! Do you drill into the framework and attach eyelets for the rigging? I'm scratching my head and wondering how best to go about it on my build.

Thank you, everyone for your interest in this build and kind comments. I have long thought the Pup kit as boring, usually prefering more complex kits of two-seaters. And that is why I only recently decided to add this one to my collection.

Thank you, Kensar for the vital info on the fuel gauge, this makes a lot of sense :-) It must have been connected to the fuel tank by a pipe at the bottom to form the system of connected vessels.

Richie, I have indeed drilled the holes for eyelets and eyelet-armed turnbuckles - I do not trust any other method to do rigging.

You are welcome, P.  In order for it to work properly, a tube would connect from the bottom of the fuel tank to the bottom of the gauge and another tube from the top of the fuel gauge to the top of the fuel tank (but you probably figured that out already).
Looking forward to more updates.

Another (very great so far) addition to the Pup Group build! ;)
I can not join, because my Pup is already done.
Seems to be again a nice kit, have fun with it!

Cheers,
Frank

You are absolutely right Kensar, there are two pipes, they will be added soon. Thanks again!

Thank you, Frank. I am really enjoying this build. So far, at least  ;)

And here are some more assembly results in the cockpit. The maze of control cables is sorted out, I have added 6 eyelets under the rear seat bearer to facilitate it and now they should suitably run to the openings in the fuselage rear.

So the interior bits are all in. The pipes to the pulsator, to the fuel gauge and the throttle links added. Also the false floor behind the seat to cover the seam line  installed. The last glimpse before closing the fuselage.

The fuselage is closed, seams are being treated, not too much of the interior is visible but I am glad it all is there inside. I have also started the work on Monosoupape. One thing which I never liked in these WNW rotaries are overscale push rods. I mounted the kit parts and cut out the rods, they will be replaced with wire bits.
